Returning T40 to Docking Station requires shutdown

Hi,
I am not able to return my T40 to it's docking station without shutting it down. All my associates can remove and replace their laptops while powered up without problems. We have tried to find a setting without any luck. What are we missing?

selling my docking station for my T440s since I won't be needing it anymore.... it is the Ultra dock with single dvi and dual DP port .... my T440s...
