Why is my screen dimmed and washed out?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Mon Sep 10, 2007 3:04 pm

My T60 SXGA+ display appears to be washed out and dimmed compared to my T23 IBM refub that i just got today (XGA display). What is going on? I checked the bios and LCD is set to Maximum brightness... Of course I have the windows brightness set to max. I also did catalyst control center restore to factory default to make sure that i did not screw up with some settings in there. I also set the power scheme to thinkpad default in the power manager.

Patience. This is a user forum, not an official support channel. Apparently nobody with an answer has read your thread yet. Over bumping won't help any.
I hope you find an answer to your problem.

A picture is worth a thousand words here. Can you post a good head-on pic (with no flash) of both your screens at maximum brightness? It will also help if you can compare your screen with another T60 to see if the levels are off on your machine.

its really hard to reproduce with the camera how the both screens actually differ. but i gave it a shot:

its harder to see the difference in brightness but you can clearly see that the T23 XGA has much crispier colors. the colors on the T60 seem to be washed out...

I'm looking at the trunk of the tree between the two pictures. The T60 shows the details in the bark, while the T23 appears to have no contrast in the dark colors.

Even though the T23 appears to have brighter colors, it apparently comes at the cost of color depth.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

now that i started to think about it, the screen on my T60 got worst within the past 4 months. I hope this thing is not dying on me, it has to take me through the next 4 years of schooling.

mattbiernat, I don't know how it actually looks, but it seems OK to me from the pic. Please remember that both these panels are TN panels. Most 14" SXGA+ (non-IPS) panels I have seen appear washed out (be it T2x or T4x or T6x), exactly like your T60. It has nothing do with the age of the panel, the technology as such is like that. Unless there has been a significant/noticeable drop in brightness or contrast recently, there is nothing to worry about.

Maybe you got lucky with your new IBM refurb" T23, that panel indeed looks nice.
