600X ultraslimbay battery not recognized

#1 Post by azmckee » Mon Nov 01, 2004 10:40 am

I have two almost identical 600X's and purchased the ultraslimbay batteries. In one system (9EU) both batteries hold a charge and it is recognized in the power management as a second battery. In the other (8EU) it recognizes the battery but will not charge the battery.

Any thoughts as to why the one will not charge the slimbay battery but it does charge the regular battery.

The only things I can think of...

1. Try initializing the BIOS. Sure. Why not?

2. It may be a difference in power management. The 600X has both APM and ACPI. ACPI on the 600X works great, if your software can handle it. XP does a fine job. 98 should use APM. I don't know if ACPI support in W2K is up to the task or not. It's tricky to force APM mode on W98SE, but IBM has instructions for that.

3. Some of the battery contacts in the 8EU could be broken. You might be able to replace just that part from another (perhaps very broken and cheap) machine.

4. Some trace or component in the 8EU is broken.

5. A piece of paper or something else is preventing contact. Open it up and clean it out. I'd clean the contacts too.

You wrote that the 8EU will recognize the battery. Will it use it?
