Turbo Memory for ReadyDRIVE only. How much 512mb or 1GB?

#1 Post by stallen » Wed Sep 12, 2007 11:25 am

I have a T61 with Turbo Memory 1GB.

In the TM console I have readyboost disabled and ready drive enabled. I use a 4GB SDHC card with the internal memory card reader for ReadyBoost. I have been using it this way for several weeks without any issues.

The question is... Is there any way to determine if I am only using 512mb or the entire 1GB of TurboMemory for ReadyDrive?

IMO, both of them are not enough.

Huh, what does that mean? Both of what are not enough? and enough for what?

If you are talking about TM and RB, 1GB of Turbo Memory and 4GB of RB is the max possible.

Good article on Anandtech about TurboMemory:

from what i understand, intel uses each chip on the turbo memory card for readydrive and readyboost respectively.   if you have another card set up for readydrive, i believe the turbo memory card will remain partitioned 512MB/512MB respectively and not utilize all 1024MB for one function.

there is an article on anandtech dissecting the functions and capabilities of turbo memory.

edit: seajosh beat me to the article link while i was typing my response.

edit #2: spelling.

I thought that might be the case.

Oh well, it seems to me that if you are trying to get maximum benefit out of ReadyDrive and ReadyBoost, then 512mb of Turbo Memory for ReadyDrive and 4GB of SDHC Sandisk Extreme III memory card for ReadyBoost would outperform 512mb/512mb of Turbo Memory for ReadyDrive/ReadyBoost. At least in theory, right?

probably.   i dunno.   i don't have turbo memory on my T61p yet as i'm waiting for card sizes to increase.   a 4GB card (2GB+2GB) sounds more logical than a 1GB.   but, by the time a 4GB TM card is available we'll probably have 8GB~16GB total system memory, vista x64 will have full driver support, and i'll finally have gray hair.

even if you disable readyboost, you will only have 512mb of readydrive....the reason for this is because there are 2 seperate memory chips...1 for each purpose

You're able to verify this by checking the properties of your hard disk. It will show the amount of flash memory dedicated to your drive. It will most likely show 3xx MB. The rest of the 512MB is used for the other parts of readydrive technology.
