R52 screen problem

#1 Post by b1791 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:03 pm

Hi, a little while ago my nephew accidentally hit the screen of my R52 with a pellet gun and since then I've been developing a black blob on my screen. I'm assuming I need a new screen? If so, where should I start looking for one...ebay?? Is a screen hard to replace? Keep in mind I'm very technically challenged LOL!

Or, should I sell the computer "as is"...though I have no idea what it would be worth.

Thank you in advance,
Beth

What's the machine type and model of the R52 and has the LCD ever been replaced before? (Look at the label on the bottom for the mach type/model.)

It says "Type 1860-2YU" ...is this the information you need?

No, the LCD has never been replaced before.

Original description: P M 740(1.7GHz), 256MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 900, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6 cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

It has a 14.1 in. XGA LCD - EBay or the Marketplace forum here would be the best places. Get the whole assembly like the one in the link below. Make sure it has wifi wires included. It is easy to change, find the R52 Maintenance information manual at lenovo.com.

Thank you sooo much! I honestly had no idea what to do with this computer. It's been sitting in my closet for a year now because I was so upset with the broken screen I didn't even want to look at it! This is the 3rd ThinkPad the kids have broken in the last 2 years...needless to say I now have a desktop that the kids aren't allowed within 20 feet of! LOL. But I so miss working with the laptop.

You mentioned that the best place to find a lcd would be ebay or here at the forum...do I make a post here to see if anyone has one to sell?

Yes, here at the marketplace forum. Ask for an entire 14.1" XGA LCD assembly for an R50 R51 R52 with wireless.

It is relatively easy to swap out the entire LCD lid assembly, as compared to just the LCD. The cost for the entire assembly is often the same as just the LCD. So I would look for one of those.

I've seen them go for as little as $100. You might want to post your location in your profile, there might be an experienced forum member nearby that can help.

On another note, no one here is going to tell you how to live, but perhaps your nephew should stick to playing with guns OUTSIDE the house (although I suppose you could have been computing in the backyard?)!!! :D

Actually replacing the whole lid assembly is a great idea because the latch on the front is broken so that needed to be replaced as well. And it doesn't seem like it will be too hard to replace the whole lid...I wasn't looking forward to taking the top apart to replace the lcd so this will avoid that.

Funny thing (well, it wasn't funny at the time) is that my nephew wasn't even near my laptop...the pellet ricocheted around the room before finally hitting the screen. Thank god the only thing he hit was the screen and not someone in the room!!

I have been hitted by a pellet gun bullet previously. It hitted my right hand and my hand bleed. It is very painful and it hurts like hell.

Get your R52 LCD replaced.
