t43 - upgraded to vista and now crashing! plz help

#1 Post by will1087 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:00 pm

Hi guys,

I upgraded my t43 to vista a while back and ever since then, theres been a few problems but nothing major.

But for the past little bit, theres been a pretty major problem. Everytime my computer runs close to full throttle (i.e. max performance, etc.), it will get really hot, really fast and the harddrive/shock detector will show an exclamation mark (not necessarily related) and my system will crash.

I'm not quite sure what to do as i'm forced to use my computer at a slower speed than I would like =(.

plz help!

Can you post temperatures for your hard drive, CPU and GPU (using Fan Control + Mobilemeter, or Notebook Hardware Control).

Are you able to also identify if your temperature increase is
- gradual from startup, or
- is related to any specific apps.

Thanks.

i have to force the processor to the lowest power (i.e. battery saving).

Anytime it is allowed to use its full power, it will overheat and crash.

How do i measure the temps?

thanks

sounds like you may have a fan failure.. when it is really hot, is there air coming out of the fan area? I had a T42 that got really hot, the cursor would freeze on the screen. If I blow air into the fan area, I can get it to respond and can continue till I can shut down. The fan was replaced under warranty and all is fine.

OK.. can you tell if the fan stays on one speed? it should speed up if the temperature goes up, if not, then there may be a problem with the fan.

Also, if the heatsink has been removed and the thermal pad was not put back correctly or damaged, the thermal path between the top of the CPU die and the heatsink may not be able to pull the heat out as well. This just means that the pad either gets replaced or you use thermal grease.

Please also report the temperatures of the CPU, GPU and Hard drive. The actual temperatures will identify which item is heating up and causing shutdowns - Thanks.
