Thinkap T40 CPU and Motherboards

#1 Post by kenhargreaves@mts.net » Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:23 pm

Will a T40 CPU from a 10/100 Ethernet board work on a Gigabit Ethernet T40 motherboard?

Yes. No problem. Make sure you have the right fan. It depends on the graphics chip. Most boards have the same ATi 7500. The chip is right above wireless slot.

What do you mean by right fan?

Some motherboasrds use a long fan that contacts both the CPU and the graphics chip. If your old board used short fan and your new board needs a long fan, you need to replace the fan. (A long fan will work with anything.) If you post the MB part numbers, someone can tell you what you need. The part number is on the bottom by the 2nd memory slot.

What happens if I don't use the long fan?

If the short fan is used on a machine which requires a long fan a few things can happen:

1. The unit overheats and dies
2. The unit exhibits weird behavior and locks up randomly
3. The GPU (graphics card) can over heat and die killing the system but leaving the CPU, RAM, HD, Wifi cards still operational. They will then need to be transplanted into a known good system.

How can you determine if you need the long fan?

The easiest way is to look up your model number (found on the bottom of the unit in this format xxxx-xxx) in the hardware maintenance manual.

Or you can determine which graphics chip you have.

I know the 32MB Radeon's do not need the long fan. Some 64MB Radeon's do and all 'p' series machines (T41p, T42p etc) shipped with the long fan and require it.

That being said the fans are relatively cheap on e-bay for around $20 to $25 depending on the seller. You can remove the old fan, add some new thermal paste (I suggest Arctic Silver 5) and install the new long fan. You could upgrade the short fan in a T40 to a long fan to help lower system temps, however it is not required to maintain system stability.

My MB is a 91P7710 which is suppose to be ATI M7-32 (ATI Radion 7500 I think) so a short fan should be OK. I have tried my old CPU for the 10/100 Ethernet MB in the upgraded Gigabit Ethernet MB and it works for a short period of time and freeses - did't get hot I don't think. IBM says each MB has its own CPU - does the Gigabit Ehternet need a different CPU?

Ken

PS I think I will upgrade to long fan just becasue of your comments anyhow.

What speed is your CPU?

What graphics chip do you have in the "gigabit motherboard"?

Heck what do you mean gigabit motherboard? Is this from another T4x series? If so what model type?

All T40 - T42p use the 400MHz Banias (1.3GHz - 1.7GHz) and Dothan (1.7GHz to 2.16GHz) CPU's. They are all socket 478 (or 479 can't remember ATM) and should be easily interchangeable with one another.

How did you come to this conclusion? It does sound like the CPU got too hot. After the transfer, you might need to reapply the thermal paste between the CPU and the fan.

Another thing: Did you ground yourself before and while touching the CPU and the rest of the mobo? If you didn't, there's a small chance that you broke something electrostatically.

91P7710 is a 10/100 ethernet MB so I assume that is your old board. What P/N is the new one? It is possible the new one is no good.
