T40 CMOS Battery
T40 CMOS Battery
Does anyone know a source for reasonably priced CMOS battery for a T40?
There appears to be two different CMOS backup batteries.
1. 14.1 inch models - 92P0986 http://www.acsoutlet.com/92P0986-ThinkPad.aspx
2. 15 inch models- 02K6572 http://www.acsoutlet.com/02K6572-ThinkPad.aspx
This is just one source I found with Google. Google the part number by itself to find other suppliers. The price for the batteries above is $17 + S&H. I would imagine you will not find a new IBM CMOS battery for much less than $15.

The cheapest way to replace a CMOS battery would be to slit open the original shrink wrap, carefully pull the welded tabs off the old battery (pliers), get a new one (same size and the "normal" 3V) for maybe a little over a dollar, tape the tabs to the proper sides of the new battery and finally tape the shrink wrap back around the assembly.
I've done this myself with a 600X, and it works fine. Some people have doubts as to whether the taped contacts will last, and that doubt is presumably justified, but there are no problems in the short term.
If you want to do things a little better and mor expensively, you could also order a battery with welded tabs and solder the existing connecting wires to it, but that might be too much trouble.
