Ever had one of those weeks when nothing goes right

#1 Post by rkawakami » Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:45 pm

[vent]
Started out okay but has gone downhill since... My younger daughter underwent a "bankart repair" on her right shoulder last Friday. She skillfully labeled her LEFT shoulder with a big "NO" in black Sharpie® prior to the arthroscopic procedure to make sure that the doctor worked on the right (and correct) one :) . An uneventful recovery at home over the weekend and continued good progress is about the only thing that has gone according to plan.

I've been trying to contact FOUR different people (2 on eBay and 2 off eBay) to get information, confirm purchases and arrange for a product return but NOBODY has called me back or responded to my emails. I've emailed (no response 3 times) and called (unanswered and NO voicemail) one eBay seller to request that my shipment be insured ($255 worth of memory modules). I finally gave up after 3 days and paid for the auction with a credit card in case they don't ship or are "lost" in the mail. I'm always suspicious when a particularly good deal is involved. No one has returned my calls about X22 hinges or T2x batteries either. I give everyone my work or cell phone as they have caller ID and voicemail but there's been no missing calls.

Last Saturday I got a package of Broadcom MiniPCI cards that I won from eBay. I finally got around to opening them up two days ago and, yeah, they're Broadcom cards all right... seven of them (when I won four) and they are BCM94309 versions (a/b/g) when I should have received BCM94306 cards (b/g). I don't really want to change my drivers to support them, so I've sent off a message asking for the right ones.

A lot of seven laptop drives finally arrive one month after my eBay win. As I feared during this time with multiple emails first saying that I owed more (huh?), changing a couple of drives to slower 4200RPM models because of inventory problems (huh?) and promises of shipping "soon", I get two DOA drives and the other five with various errors (SMART and sector read errors).

Here's the biggie: Wednesday evening as my older daughter is in San Luis Obispo (half way between San Jose and L.A.), she called my wife and said the Jeep had made a "tiny knocking" sound as she was climbing up the hills out of L.A. (about 200 miles before). My wife then called me at work and ask me about the knocking. In hindsight, I should have called my daughter directly and asked some more questions, but I said it could be anything from bad gas, engine timing, exhaust leak, yada, yada..

My daughter gets home around 10pm, unloads the Jeep and we finally get around to talking about the sound and I hear "it was kinda embarrassing pullng away from stop lights and having the Jeep go 'clack', 'clack', 'clack'". Right away warning lights and flashing bulbs go off in my head; this is NOT something that I'm going to like... We go outside, I ask her to start up the Jeep and it sounds like a diesel (it's not). I look at her dashboard and ask her how long the oil pressure gauge has been sitting at ZERO :(  She doesn't know and can't remember what the gauge was reading in the last few days. Thursday morning I check the dipstick; as expected there's NOTHING at the end of it. Plug is still in the oilpan and there's not that much evidence of oil leakage from the top or sides of the block. Go to Kragen's and get five quarts, pour them in, start it up, 40PSI of oil pressure but still get the "clacking". Engine is toast (or soon will be). Factory replacement runs at least $6K but has a good warranty. Checked around the area for an auto shop and they quoted $3500 for a rebuild with a 3 year/50K warranty. Wife and daughter are now out looking for a car. Actually just got a call from the wife asking about an '07 Corolla for $15K. Wife wants something new-ish simply for the warranty. My daughter still wants the Jeep fixed. She also has to get back to L.A. by Sunday evening for school and work on Monday so there's the added pressure of having to buy something quickly. Both my wife and daughter don't want her to drive the wife's Honda van back to L.A. (and she ain't getting my BMW even if she could drive a stick :) ).

So after a couple of more cell phone calls to me here at work, a deal is being struck between the three girls: Wife will pick something out that she feels comfortable with since the van will probably be sold in a couple of years (2002 Odyssey with all of the bells and whistles) and then the "new" car will be hers. I get the Jeep fixed and the older daughter will pay me back over time; looks like another L.A. trip for me in the near future as I'll probably be the one driving it down. The younger daughter may or may not end up driving the "new" car for awhile (depending upon how forceful my wife is) but in the long run, the daughter will probably end up with something more to her liking than whatever my wife ends up selecting.

AArrgghhh....

And it just keeps getting better (worse?)... A UJ-840 drive I also got from eBay came in today. Nice clean unit that originally looks like it was in a Toshiba system (from the mounting bracket bolted to the back of the drive). Yes I know that the eBay title (Sony) and description (Toshiba) don't match, but they both say UJ-840.

Can you see where this is going?

The label on top looks to be real enough. There's a small sticker placed over the firmware area as it looks like it's been upgraded since it left the factory. The label DOES say "UJ-840".

However, both Windows and DVDInfoPro says it's a UJ-820S; a single layer burner and not the dual layer that I was expecting  . This is getting depressing...

On the bright side, it does seem to read all my test disks correctly. I'll have to see what happens when I throw a DVD+R DL disk in there and attempt to write 8GB of data.

Ray, if it makes you feel remotely better, I had a soda can explode in my car while I was driving to work in the morning last Friday. Also had my car (which started leaking oil this month) die (due to a bad wire) on the way home today in an area where nobody speaks a word of English. Car died again when I was the first in a nice line of traffic.

I should be happy about those being the worst of my troubles at the moment; just thought I'd share though.

I hope everything starts looking up. Best wishes to the daughter who had the repair. Anything positive to think about? I know I interviewed for a promotion at work a few days ago and I just got paid so I have money to spend.

Ray, wow, that is a real load for one week. Hopefully the universe got it all out of its system for "Dump on Ray" week and things will go smoothly for you. I have had times when a series of things went bad fast and I was so in despair and bango, things resolved themselves right before my eyes. It is amazing to witness.

Wishing your daughter a complete and quick recovery, and you and your wife a strong heart.

Hmmm, and I thought *I* had a tough week. Nothing like you, though, and now, nothing even worth posting.

FWIW, I don't think repairing engines is worthwhile. I had to replace a transmission in my (long gone) '89 Volvo, and was able to get a non-warranted used box installed for 700 dollars, but that is as far as I will go.

Best wishes to you, Ray. ... JDH

You've got me beat. Me, I've just got two:

First was the death of my Palm m505. I was travelling light to work, so I put it in with my lunch. Unfortunately, the container with the chicken salad decided to leak, so it sat marinating in dressing. I took it apart as soon as I discovered it and flushed it out, but there is definite corrosion on the motherboard no signs of life after two days of drying.

I guess I can talk consolation in the fact that it gave its life so that my iPod (also in the bag) didn't meet that fate.

The other is also an ebay story, but not one I can blame on a seller. I nabbed what I thought was a great deal on a battery for my wife's Acer Aspire 3680. According to any number of other auctions, this should have been the correct battery, but it appears that Acer must have redesigned the model to use a newer, smaller battery.

Sigh... time to relist the item, I guess...

Yeah! That does brighten my day :) . Had something like that happen a couple of weeks ago when a Starbuck's DCCF (no whip) semi-exploded out the straw (heat expansion?) Couldn't figure out what the dark brown spots were on the sunroof panel and passenger seat until I looked down in the cupholder and saw my drink oozing out.

So far, nobody has tried to cut me off on the road so I'm grateful for that. The little rugrat is healing nicely. She just showed my her three Frankenstein (or is that Fronkensteen?; bonus points for IDing the movie - no fair Googling).

The car shopping is over. We now have a 2001 Honda Accord LX sedan with 61,000 miles that my older daughter is going to take to L.A. while I get the Jeep fixed. I've already got some $$$ invested into the Jeep and since she really likes it, I'm going to be getting quotes from other shops in the area for a rebuild. Pouring a couple of thousand into the Jeep to (hopefully) keep it running for several more years (a '95 Grand Cherokee with 150K miles) vs. the cost of getting something newer and more fuel-efficient, but with lots more unknowns in the mechanicals, is a hard decision to make. The transmission was worked on last year. There's a three year old radiator and exhaust manifold in there are well. The starter was replaced about two years ago. The body is still in good shape and the suspension seems fine. Given all of that I think a rebuilt motor with a 3 year warranty for around $3500-$3800 could be worth it. I can't see paying the +$6K that the local Jeep dealer quoted me, even if it is a 7 year/70K warranty (I'm pretty sure that's what the service advisor said). If it is still in decent shape after two years, it could be sold and some of that cost recovered.

There are places that sell engines for exchange. You give them yours and they give you a rebuilt one. You can also do the same with a "Long block" or "Short block". These engines and blocks do come with a warranty and usually at a good price.

About 5 years ago, I bought a Long block, 6.9L diesel, for my Ford F250 pickup that had a cracked water jacket. I bought the engine from a shop in Houston that specialized in the rebuilding of Ford diesels (actually made by International). I had the block shipped to Denver, then I had to ship mine back to them. I went this route because I got a very good price on the block, and I knew that since they specialized in these diesels, they should know what they are doing. It is by chance that I happened to be in the Houston area previously and noticed their ad in the Houston Chronicle. In addition to the block, I had to rent an engine hoist from a local rental shop to be able to handle the engine. The engine hoist was wheeled and had a towing bar. I towed the hoist on the trailer ball of my pickup.

Anyway, it's something to think about if you have the time, tools, and inclination.

@GomJabbar: I've seen several places on the net that sell long blocks for about $1500. If I had the proper tools, time and expertise, I'd do the work myself, but sadly I only have one of those (time). There was once a time where I could do my own valve adjustments, timing belt replacement and rebuild a carb (1971 Capri 2.0L) but those days are long gone...

Hmm.. recalling the conversation I had, I'm not quite sure if the shop I talked to quoted me a price for him personally rebuilding the engine or simply purchasing a long block from some supplier and installing it. I found one place that sells a Jeep long block with a 7 yr/70K warranty for $1200. So I may do some of the legwork myself (finding, ordering, shipping a motor) and then have a local shop do the labor.

@The Spirit of X21: Yes, you are correct. As I said, "bonus points" are all that you win :) . And I'm still working on those disks - I haven't forgotten!

Wow, Ray...I was having a bad day, and feeling quite depressed to be honest, because I had cheated pretty bad on my diet today (I've lost 21lbs so far), but that pales in comparison....

Good luck!

Well, now that is a nice buy and a good car. Just like our "new to us" Hyundai 2001 Elantra 5 speed 41,000 miles we just bought for $3900! You can get good used cars out there. May she enjoy it in great health and safety :D and you without too many more white hairs. (oh, and DH said yes it is worth it to put a reman engine in that Jeep, as you get a 3 year warranty with them and usually at good prices; he's repaced an engine, transmission, clutch and most other parts on his cars himself over the years - right in the driveway.)

man, i hate those weeks, ive allready spilled my bad luck story here and a month later it is still causing utter destruction of my life.

my wife is loosing function of her right pinky finger from the accident, the car insurance company is jerking us around just as the police department was jerking us around as well. my jeep has also formed a bad oil* leak and lost all oil, it was hit by a snow plow in march and we have been getting the run around from the insurance company for the last 7 months on that and they want to close my file because of lack of response, ive made many calls and sent many letters! the new keyboard i bought on ebay came all jacked up.

but my dad tought me that no matter what happens, just keep a smile on your face and talk about it to keep the stress down. he lived in a hotel room for a year and a half because he was broke and he broke his neck and could'nt work.

just remember to keep this thought in your head. "i will come out of this better than i went in."

idk if it's just me but bad weeks are just a part of life.

@jamerslong and al7kz: Hope you and your family quickly recover from those incidents as my problems are mostly solvable by throwing money at them :) . As the saying goes, "as long as you have your health....". Fortunately, I can't complain about that at the moment (knock on wood).

Another funny note about the "new" car.... My wife bought the aftermarket Karr alarm system but didn't have time to get it installed Friday evening. So I took it back to the dealer on Saturday and waited around for about 40 minutes while they worked on the car. Got it back and it seems to arm/disarm and lock/unlock the doors like it is supposed to. What's the problem? We found out on Sunday just before my daughter headed back home that if you turn on the windshield wipers, the door locks start operating   ! Now that the car is in L.A., we're trying to see if the local Honda dealer down there can take a look at it. If not, then I hope it won't rain too much before I can get the Jeep fixed up and delivered to my daughter.

 I agree!

well, ray it sounds like a good old fashion streak of bad luck is still on your side, maybe you will be counter acted with some great luck like free stuff, win a criuse or something here in the next month or so *knock on wood*

i am curious how the winsheild wipers could get crossed into the alarm system?

al7kz: you have a funny yet sad story. i am glad to see your still kickin. i wouldnt be to worried about the hospital staff being calm, they have seen so much that they were probably pretty sure you were safe. they just had to get your heart back in order. i wouldnt be scared unless the staff got touchy and nervous. thats when you have to worry.

<sigh>

It just keeps rolling in... The Jeep's driver-side rear tire has a nail in it. It went flat while sitting in front on my house last week. Fortunately it is a slow leak as I've pumped it up to 32psi a couple of days ago and it's not too bad yet. So, it will be driven (slowly) to the tire store a couple of miles away to be repaired under warranty (clacking like a diesel all of the way).

Got a quote from the local engine rebuilder... $3900 with a 3 year/50K mile warranty. Might save $300-$500 getting a crate engine with a longer warranty (7 yr/70K) but there's lots of exclusions and they don't cover much in the way of labor costs (max of $400 to r&r the engine).

The eBay saga continues as well. After contacting the seller through eBay's message system (3 times), calling twice to Florida (no answer or voicemail both times despite it being a "business" number; I Googled it), I finally received this message a few minutes ago; 11 days after paying for an auction:
sorry WE check the usps tr# it went to a different address our mistake and that company no body answer the phone or respond emails .
This message was attached to my full PayPal refund. My gut feeling is that the seller didn't ship it as that explanation doesn't hold up for me. Why the suspicion? 10 sticks of Micron 512MB PC133 SODIMM for $264 shipped. You do the math. And even if they did ship it and it did go to the wrong address, I still lost out on this deal.

Bummer. I will be keeping an eye on that seller and if he posts another similar auction, I'll be ready to snipe it.. again.

Migawd, Ray... that wasn't a bad week, it was a horrible one. I almost feel lucky that I only managed to throw myself down the stairs and break a wrist during that time. Wonder how many "Frankenstein points" I get for the scar on my wrist where they put in the metal plate?

Your Ebay troubles are also nothing to sneeze at, particularly when you talk about the money involved. I have some difficulties at the moment, too, but was recently extreme lucky to buy (cheap) a 256MB PC100 16-chip RAM module from a seller who - with several recent negative feedback points - then proceeded to withdraw from Ebay. The RAM was luckily good, but I just got under the wire on that.

I certainly hope your troubles taper off, since now you're experienced pretty well everything that can go wrong. And I'm glad I don't have to pay for your high blood pressure pills since I don't think I would have the cash
