T40 CPU change - remove LCD ??

Hello,

The T40 series Hardware Manual seems to be saying that the LCD should be removed before changing the CPU on a T40.

I have yet to open it up, but I don't see in the pictures why it would be necessary to remove the LCD ??

It is not necessary to remove the LCD to replace the CPU on a T40.

All that is required to change a CPU in a T40 is to remove the keyboard and front palm-rest. The screws that hold them in place are clearly marked on the back of the laptop. You'll have to remove the plastic screw covers along the front to get to some of them.
All the keyboard screws are the same size but there are different sizes for the palm-rest. Once they are both removed there is one last screw, by the PCMCIA socket, that has to come out in order to slide out the fan. There are 3 screws for the fan, unplug its connector and slide it out to the right. Unlock the CPU socket with a straight screwdriver and lift up the CPU.
Used a dab of thermal grease on the new CPU, clean off the underside of the fan where the CPU sits and reverse order to reinstall everything. The 3 fan screws need to be finger tightened then each screw tightened a little more in sequence until tight, which insures a good bond with the CPU.
I wouldn't screw down either the palm-rest or keyboard until you know the laptop will boot. I just did my T40 CPU change on Wednesday in about 10 minutes without a problem.

Perhaps a moderator can sticky this thread and remove from the title the words " - Remove LCD ? " from the end in order to make it more general.
