T41 Power issues

#1 Post by TPLIX » Sat Sep 15, 2007 1:18 pm

The T41 that I recently purchased may have a mobo problem, Im not sure... I've searched for a while and couldn't find anyone who had this issue.

I cannot plug in the laptop without having the screen flicker to a dimmer setting along with it beeping. The battery charges, but when it reaches 100%, the taskbar icons alternate from the battery and charging mode which causes the screen to dim and beep on and off again. Also, when the battery is charging and I reset the AC adapter, the laptop does not detect the power source and a high pitch buzz is heard around the connector.

Another AC Adapter didn't solve the issue and the warranty expired.
Thinkwiki diagnosed a "system board failure".

Maybe its a driver or software that I haven't installed yet? Updating the BIOS is not possible because the battery cannot be fully charged.

Everything else works fine.

well definitely a candidate for a mobo replacement. Sounds like a lot of issues and drivers wont fix that. Does the system even boot?

The system boots fine and there are no other issues The laptop works well on battery as well as when its charging. The beeps occur when the the laptop is plugged in without a battery, when the plug is reset during charging and when the battery is 100% charged.

Anyone who can deal with the issue and is interested in the laptop can always pm me since I may put it up for sale.

The issue occurs on the OS. Is there some type of charging mechanism on the mobo that could be replaced?

Also, can I upgrade my BIOS while my battery is being charged? Has anyone tried it?

Well, the T41 (and all the Ts actually) have the same DC/DC converter design... I'm working on mine, since it won't turn on unless on AC, but it seems to me like something is wrong with your's too. It's not an easy task, though...
