Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2000

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Mon Sep 17, 2007 8:59 pm

I've been using Outlook at work forever, but never used it for personal email. I set up my Comcast POP3 email through Outlook and there's only one thing I can't figure out...

Once I open an email in Outlook, if I visit comcast.net to check my mail, the message won't even be in the inbox. Does anyone know a setting that will make the items in Outlook the same as what's shown on my comcast.net account, and vice versa?

I don't have Outlook 2000 running but the settings should be similar to my Outlook 2007 settings.

Tools > Account Settings > (Choose your Comcast account) > Change > More Settings > Advanced Tab.

Under "Leave a copy of messages on the server" you can choose what Outlook will do when you read a message. If you uncheck the box, the message will be removed from Comcast's server when you read it in Outlook.

If you don't want this behavior, check the box and then your messages will remain on Comcast's server even if read in Outlook. Then you can view them on both Outlook and on comcast.net, although managing deletions can get interesting.

Thanks for your reply. I posted this initially in a rush, so I didn't mention any details.

I did find "Leave a copy of message on server," which I had checked before I posted here. I didn't check "remove from server after X days, but I did check "Remove from server when deleted from 'Deleted Items.'"

:?:

I got the topic reply notification email while I had Outlook open. I read it, but didn't delete it. When I went to comcast.net, the topic reply email wasn't even there.

Strange. It sounds like you have the settings done properly.

I would suggest sending yourself a couple of test emails and opening them on Outlook and on comcast.net to see if the behavior is repeatable and as expected.

At times the mail servers are backed up and you get slow replies in your mailbox, I guess that could be the case since the settings you mentioned are certainly the right one. I experience the same issue with my work POP3 account sometimes.

FWIW, this is how they tell us to do things:
Under the Server Port Numbers, Incoming Mail (POP3) heading, check “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)”.

Under the Delivery heading, check the boxes labeled “Leave a copy of message on server” and “Remove from server when deleted from ‘Deleted Items’”
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."

Thanks, ryengineer.

I don't know if I have the SSL checked off, but I'll make sure of that later. Since I made the changes and gave it some time, it appears to be working OK.

It's just weird that the message can get ripped off the server by Outlook, and completely disappear from comcast.net. Oh well, such is life!
