Which Lightweight DVD-RW?

#1 Post by First Light » Tue Sep 18, 2007 1:19 pm

Looking for suggestions for a smallish (ie. travel size) DVD-RW USB burner for an X60s.

What about Lenovo's ThinkPlus USB 2.0 CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Drive? I know it does not write to a DVD, but does anyone know if they have a "Combo III" or anything similar that will write to a DVD? I'm basically comfortable with IBM/Lenovo's equipment and have had excellent results with them whenever I have had a problem with any of their hardware, but will consider other brands.

Don't want a double-layer, or a blue lazer drive.

If you're not limited to Lenovo's, which were actually OEMs from Philips/LG/Toshiba/Panasonic/TEAC anyway, you may want to take a look at Lacie's.

There are some models which are pretty good because you don't need an AC power but will gonna need two USB ports as their power sources (two ports are needed when burning only). They cost around $100-140 http://www.amazon.com/8X-Lightscribe-Ps ... 66-8922542

Another option is you can buy a "slimline" DVD drive + an external enclosure and put them together yourself. I used to use one NEC drive and really love it. This would be a bit chepaer and you can choose your favorite burner too.

You can find both options from online stores like http://newegg.com or eBay.[/url]

Ordered today a Plextor PX-608CU (seems to have a very small form factor) as well as a Thinkpad X61T. Will find out soon how they work together.

I have that Plextor drive and a Thinkpad X61t, I love them both! If anyone is interested, I have a second Plextor, still new sealed in box, that I'm gonna sell soon...

I use a no-name slim external USB DVD-RW drive from eBay. Works like a champ and the price is right. :) The two USB ports to the right of the X60 provide enough power for it to work.

The casing looks identical to Aphex's link, except mine is a tray-load, not a slot load.
