T40 - hard drive compatibility

#1 Post by teststrips » Wed Sep 19, 2007 6:58 am

I'm a new member here... been reading a lot of posts about hard drives, but haven't found what I need. I've seen a lot of discussion about 7200rpm drives, but I'm looking for capacity not speed. I've not found confirmation that anyone has upgraded their internal drive to larger than 100 gigs. I'd like to have a 160 Gig or larger.

The reason I'm posting is because of some review comments on a 250 gig PATA drive that newegg had (its strangely missing from the site now). Comments mentioned that you had to have a newer chipset in order to support drives above 120 gigs.. the T40 is getting a bit aged + I just wanted to make sure I could put a drive of this size in before buying. I probably won't go with the 250 gig, but I'm highly considering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152051 Will this work in my t40?

Also, I've seen a hard drive caddy that appears to fit in the CD/DVD rom slot to add a 2nd hard drive - also mentions a 100 gig limit... is this for real, or did they just write 100gigs when that was the largest available size at the time. Caddy on ebay

Thanks!

You can install any 9.5mm ATA6 (IDE) laptop hard drive in that machine and it will work. There are no 7200rpm ATA drives larger that 100GB, so install a 5400rpm drive. I am not aware of any size limit for a drive installed in the 2nd HDD adapter option.

You could always get a external like me? Unless you travel a lot with your files needed.

I currently have 2 fantom external 250 gig drives, both used for media and office files. The current hdd on my t40 is strictly for running programs
T40 - 1.3GHz, 1.50 GB ram......pretty much stock minus the ram upgrade.
