Being really spoilt, but...

#1 Post by malachont » Wed Sep 19, 2007 11:27 am

After I upgrade my A31p's B Wifi to the 2200BG card, I will lose the faxmodem. Not the bluetooth, though, right?

Now in the dead laptop from which I salvaged the 2200BG wifi card, I found another possible organ to transplant:
to its Faxmodem port there is connected a tiny expansion card called 'Agere Athens AM2'. Google says its a modem card (surprisingly!)

I realize its too much to hope for (even the cross compatibility of Mini PCI greatly impresses me, must have been quite painful for the various manufacturers to lose all that future income from the hardware uniformity which just saved me buying a Wifi PC-Card...) but will the A31p accept this card?

What's the dead laptop you've been taking the parts out?

Its a 1.8Ghz Centrino Dothan machine. It developed a problem with the screen contacts which was not worth it to repair.

I doubt that it will work. Do you really need the modem that bad?

I saw the Bluetooth is occupying a BDC slot and I don't use BT at all. So I thought I could replace it, but the modem card is a yet another slot standard- I didn't realize there were so many standard Laptop slot types - CDC, MDC, BDC, MiniPci and what else?

Can one get a BDC compatible Modem card? I'd use the PC-Card slot only its occupied by a 4 port USB card and there's no room.

Alternately, are there Wifi B/G cards with modems? I haven't found a single one.

No b/g cards with modems...

Maybe you should just get a modem PCMCIA card for a God forbid situation, because I doubt that you'll find another solution if you want your wireless upgraded...

That sounds like the right plan to me, too. 3Com makes an XJACK PC Card 56K modem. When you're not using it, you can barely tell it's there.
