Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

What 600X models support speedsteping

#1 Post by LPC » Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:07 pm

I have been reading and it seems there are two tires of 600x models? Some having speedstep and others not?

My plan is to purchase a 600x and upgrade the CPU to 850ghz.

I have read here that the 5FU and 9FU have SS. So during my search for a base system should I avoid 3FU's and 4FU's?
I assume 7FUs and 8FUs also support SS?

In summary, what 600x models support SS?

Thanks

I dont have the model number information on the top of my head, but I do know that the 450Mhz models do not support speedstep. This document confirms my statement:

Also, AFAIK, IBM never originally sold a 850Mhz 600X. I might be wrong here, maybe Whizkid of Phil (pkiff) ca confirm this.

edit: Found it. Only the 600X thinkpads with SpeedStep are 5F* and 9F*:

Hope this helps.

See this post

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... tep+boards

And you don't have to have a speedstep MB to upgrade.mine wasn"t.(Of course it doesn't actually step..it runs at 850Mhz when the power adaptor is used)

There are many, many posts about this in the 600 forum.

Wonderful! Thanks Gator :thumbs-UP:

I read all the threads 600 upgrade sticky and it was never confirmed wich 600x models had SS. I would guess then that the 5Fx and 9Fx are the only 600x models that can be upgraded to 850mhz?

My 3EU 600x says, on one of its config utility screens, that it has a "600mhz speed step" processor.

Then I don't think you have a stock 3EU machine. The original specs for the 2645-3EU model are listed in the "twbook" as:
Win 98
Pentium III 450MHz
CD-ROM
6.0GB hard drive
PIO4 or Ultra DMA/33
Avail Dec 1999 / Withdrawn Jan 2001 Dec

That applet update is dated 3-2000. My 2645-9WU was made in 12-2000. There are probably other SpeedStep 600Xs. They just aren't listed because they don't require the fix.
