Hello everyone,
I've got an X40 with linux / Fedora Core 5 / XFCE4 window environment installed on it and the UltraBase X4 docking station. The current and max res on the laptop is 1024x768 and I was looking to get an external LCD monitor with support for the same or higher res for dual display. My question is whether I could use a widescreen 19" LCD (looking at the Viewsonic VA1912WB-3) and at the very minimum have it display 1024x768 decently (not blured) and at the most display a widescreen resolution. The Viewsonic I'm looking at supports an optimal res of 1440x900. Does FC5 linux support a different res on the second monitor, and a widescreen format at that, while the first screen (the laptop's TFT) is set to 1024x768?
Thanks in advance!
Question about the X40 and external monitor support

Hey creed and a belated welcome to the forum.
Noticed your question didn't get a reply and decided to at least get the ball rolling. I have some down time tonight.
To answer your question......yes but it will be your Xorg file and not FC5 that gives you the latitude your looking for. That's the short answer.....
I found a site to help you with your question; http://www.chronox.de/x40_linux/linux_on_x40.html
Scroll down to the dual-head config. The persons displayed their Xorg config file as an example and gives some insight on resolution differences to the second display.

Lots of good stuff.
Hope that helps ya....... stay safe eh.

Thanks for the help! I ended up buying an Acer LCD monitor with 1280x1024 native resolution. The xorg.conf file you pointed me to didn't configure my displays as spanning desktops with multiple resolutions right off the bat. But I was able to figure it out from other examples online. I now have the notebook set up for 1024x768 and spanning across to the Acer at 1280x1024. Very nice!
