Password manager fails to open after css8 upgrade

#1 Post by libit » Thu Sep 20, 2007 12:37 am

Hi,
I had css7 with password manager (pm) working ok. Yesterday I upgraded to 8 following all instructions (run migration assist, uninstall 7, installed 8, got msg from assistant that it has restored all css settings).
Now css8 works all right and also PM shows up in the tray area. If I right click its icon I get the menu and if I click on "preferences" I get the preferences screen. But if I click on Open Password Manager, the password manager main window shows up for about 1/10 of a second and then disappers!!! It doesn't stay on screen and I cannot do anything with it.
Also if I go to a website which asks for logon, I get the PM prompt "Would you like to save this website with password manager?", but even if I click yes, I don't get the PM dialog.
Any hint on how to get PM back to work?
BTW yesterday I've also updated the ATI driver but I doubt that this is connected.
Thanks for any help

Are you using Fingerprint Software 5.6? If so, you could try deleting your currently stored fingerprints and re-registering them in CSS 8.

Yes I'm using fingerprint 5.6.
I played a bit with css8 "manage security policies" and after a while the password manager started to display its windows properly.
Still I couldn't access the stored password, and the password manager icon on the left panel of css8 was still disabled; but fortunately I could export the password manager db all-right.
Then I went back to css8 and tried advanced->reset security settings.
After this PM has started to work correctly, its icon in css8 is enabled and of course I reimported the password db and can see all of them.
So it seems to me that the "Upgrade Assistant" is not really working and just cause a mess transfering probably invalid settings for the new version.

Now there are a couple of remaining problems:
- Password Manager doesn't work anymore with firefox (even if the mozilla option is enabled in its settings). Css7 used to work all-right with firefox, is there a new firefox plugin for css8?
- In css8, "enhanced security" panel, the "Deactivate" button doesn't really do anything and the status stays "activated" (but this is not very important, as I don't need to deactivate it)

It sounds like you have resolved most of the issues. However, I will say that each upgrade of CSS and Fingerprint Software (FS) creates new challenges (read: bugs). The best combination I have found was CSS7 and FS 5.4 (or the version immediately preceding 5.6). In logging into my Web-based e-mail and other password-protected locations, I have to swipe my finger twice about 85% of the time. This began occurring with the latest versions of CSS and FS.

I have used the Upgrade Assistant only once, and I did not encounter any issues. Maybe I was just lucky.

I would contact Lenovo with respect to the availability of a Firefox pliug-in (I use IE6). As for the "Deactivation" feature on CSS8, you pretty much answered your own question: ignore it.

Great, uninstalling and reinstalling the firefox extension solved that issue too.

Regarding PM asking for the finger twice:
My secirty policy is: finger only once for PM but with a default of "finger everytime". So that everytime PM tries to fill a web form with a password it prompts for the finger (I'd prefer to set NO-Security for PM itself, but that doesn't seem to be a valid configuration)
With this policy, I noticed that while with css7 PM asked for the finger as soon as it started (so it was one swipe to login and another swipe soon after make PM happy) and then only when I browsed to password-protected pages. Now with css8, it doesn't prompt me for the finger when it start, but the FIRST time I browse to a password-protected page it asks for the finger twice (one to open the password db and the second one to actually fill the form)
