T42 replacing fan and heatsink

#1 Post by Rockhine » Thu Sep 20, 2007 12:15 pm

I own a T-42 2379 DXU.

I need to replace the fan, and I recently received my new "long" fan and heat sink module from IBM. I plan to install it later this evening.

The new fan comes with what I believe is white thermal grease on the section that will be on top of the processor. I have read that Arctic Silver 5 is one of the best products. My questions is whether I should install as is; wipe off the white thermal grease and replace with Arctic Silver 5 or apply some of the Arctic Silver 5 over the white thermal grease. I am also not sure as to how much Arctic Silver 5 to apply or if I should also apply some directly on the processor.

With respect to the section that is over the video chip, it comes with what appears to be a square plastic "peel off" section and under that is a thin sheet of black rubber type material. Shall I remove the peel off plastic and apply Arctic Silver 5 on top of the rubber material or install as is.

Any other advice on installing the fan will be greatly appreciated.

Remove the plastic sheet from the GPU heatsink and use whatever thermal compound came with the fan. Arctic silver is good stuff but not worth the special trip/expense. Also if the machine is still under warranty, you'd want the original paste on there anyway in case you have to send it in for repair.

Yeah, I agree, just install the heatsink as it came, and remove the pink film on the GPU part of the heatsink.

Which FRU did you get?

I just removed the old fan/heatsink module and the pink material over the video chip which I thought had to be peeled off, was on the original one.

Shall I install as is? Should I spead some AS5 over the video chip and the cpu?

I have tried to use the T43 Long Fan on my GF's T42, the cooling effect is extremely outstanding.

whereas the buggy T43 couldn't adopt the T42 long fan, it always prompt me "FAN ERROR" and shut down automatically, i guess this is another issue which is similar to Aftermarket HDD upgrade for all the T43 models!!!

actually, no, the fans are different even though they look the same.

the t43 fan can go up to 5500rpm, while the t42 fan can only go to about 4500rpm

cirthix,
ya, i knew that T43's long fan is more powerful, what i mean is that other fan design cannot be installed in T43 model.

A weird thing on the T43 Fan Long used on a T42p is that in BIOS Mode the fan would never exceed 4200rpm, ie. would not speed up to the 5000rpm range.

So the TDP is the same in a T42/T43 fans?

basically,
T43's fan has a bigger dimension of heat sink design for the GPU area, because T43 is using PCI-express X300 which would dissipate more heats.

Leave the pink film on. Some of the fans have a thin plastic cover over the pads. The pink cover is supposed to be there.

Just so semantics do not get in the way...

Only in the case of Fan assembly, long, you need to peel the plastic sheet b off on the thermal rubber before you place it on the system board. Fan assembly, long M10 DOES NOT have the plastic sheet.

Yes, I never did understand this - the thick rubber pad (almost 1/8") on the long fan looks more like an INSULATOR than a heat conductor for the GPU - what's the deal here???
