T23 BIG PROBLEMS

#1 Post by iamdmc » Sat Sep 22, 2007 12:32 am

So here's the deal...
When I first got this laptop it would shut off after a few minutes of use when I installed more than 1 program at once. I guessed that this was something to do with the CPU. The fan would be off completely until 2 seconds before the shut off, and would run at maximum for those 2 seconds. My thought was that the thermal censor was screwed or the CPU was busted. I tested the system with another CPU and the same thing happened. I underclocked it, and it caused no problems until a little while ago...

So for this problem, can anyone tell me whether this is a Mobo problem?

Second problem: The system has seized up completely. It will not turn on, the battery light does not come on when plugged to AC. I'm guessing this is board failure - seeing as how the other problems I had seemed to be board caused, but I'd like a few opinions.

THANKS!

Your first problem does sound like it has (had) something to do with the thermal sensors. It would have been helpful to have a temperature monitoring program installed so that you could see what might have been happening. It could also be due to a bad fan or some other component on the motherboard.

Your current issue with the "bricked" T23 can be:

- a bad AC adapter AND a drained battery
- a blown fuse on the motherboard
- or some other power conditioning part on the motherboard is bad

If you can verify that the AC adapter and battery are okay, either in another system or measuring the voltages, then would help to eliminate those as being your problem. If those check out fine, then you are left with a motherboard problem. It's not easy to determine most motherboard failures unless a part is obviously smoked or has fallen off the board. If you are the adventuresome type, you can remove the motherboard from the base and closely inspect several components which have been documented here. You can also refer to the scans I made of a T23 motherboard here to help you locate parts.

When first I had the shutting down problem, I tried to install a thermal monitoring program, but it made the computer give BSOD's, and then power off immediately.

I've tried the laptop with my friend's battery and charger - did not work. The battery is now dead (completely), and the charger works.

So I think it's the ******* mobo.

Thanks for your help, though!
