T42 keeps rebooting when screen is adjusted

#1 Post by wonderdogger » Mon Sep 24, 2007 5:07 am

My laptop has some serious issues. If I lean on the front pad or tilt the screen the wrong way, it goes dark and then after a few seconds reboots itself. Sometimes if I am playing mp3s the music keeps playing even after it goes dark.

For a brief time during the problems, there was some weird situation where the screen font would go all large and there would be displayed on the screen for a few seconds some error about the atidg (these werent the exact letters of the name) display driver or something like that? But now it doesnt do it any longer.

The laptop boots fine - it just doesnt like being pressed or adjusted in the wrong way. Note that if I keep it on a flat surface and don't adjust it or press on the front panel, it works indefinitely without rebooting.

Anyone have thoughts about what this could be?

It sounds like a bad solder connection at the GPU BGA. See this thread -

Look at the Sticky just above: t42 shuts down when i move it:

I am quite sure you have the same problem. There are some solutions in that Sticky.

How depressing. I think you're right. Thanks.
