#1 Post by ccl127 » Wed Nov 03, 2004 8:35 am

I just got my new tp today and was wondering if you guys had some suggestions on what I should do first. I'm going to swith to XP classic, install firefox and spybot search and destroy but is there anything else that I should do?
Thx.

1) get more RAM +512...
2) order recovery CD's
3) remove hidden partition

have fun with your new TP.

Remove IBM software you don't need. There are some threads on this forum, where you can read about usability of the programs.
IBM ThinkPad T42 2378-FVU: Pentium M 735 (1.7GHz), 768MB RAM, Radeon 9600 64MB, 14.1" SXGA+, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG

I just got an FVU a couple months back myself. Here are my thoughts...

1) Agree with the extra 512M ram.
2) Agree with the remove preloaded software that you don't need/want.
3) Run through all the MS updates (particularly SP2) before you get too comfortable.
4) Make sure you're up to date on IBM drivers via Access IBM.
5) If you have the Intel 2200 wireless adapter, upgrade to the latest driver from the Intel site (there seem to be some corruption problems with the latest driver supplied by IBM).
6) Install AVG for good, free virus protection (or whatever AV you prefer if you already have one).
7) You should be able to burn the recovery CDs directly off the system (Access IBM / Create Recovery Discs) rather than mess with ordering them from IBM.

The 9 cell battery is also nice if you find yourself away from power often. I'm also contemplating adding bluetooth and upgrading the HD to 60 or 80G, but both of those just depend on whether that's something you'd use. The RAM is a no brainer for XP though.
