upgrading x31 RAM, any suggestions?
Hey forum
I've had my x31 for a while now, and no complaints so far, but I want to try to upgrade the RAM. Is this something I can do myself? Forgive me b/c I am not the most knowlegable when it comes to hardware...
If anyone has any resources that would help me choose the right RAM and maybe some sort of directions that would be helpful!
My system is pretty basic, I have not installed or upgraded anything. Do you x31 owners have any other suggestion on what I should upgrade?
Thanks!

Hello. You can upgrade the RAM very easily on your own. Check out the movie on this page for instructions on how to perform RAM installation:fobsgonewild wrote:Hey forum

I think you will need 200-pin DDDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC2700) RAM. The max upgrade is 2GB so you should get two 1GB chips if you want to max it out. You can get it at a good price from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE
Other good upgrades for the X31 are:
(1) Upgrade harddrive to a 7200RPM. The Hitachi 7k100 is a popular choice for X31 owners on this forum.
(2) Upgrade the wifi card to Atheros a/b/g or b/g.

So the ram you have linked at Newegg , the laptop ddr333(2700) is a good price at $57.99?
Theres a computer store just down the road selling laptop ddr400(pc3200) ram for 45.99cdn.
I jues i should go pick up two of them befor he changes the price.

Yep it's 1gig's.cwf wrote:That sounds like a good deal but are you sure it is 1GB? If so, it's a great deal so take it cuz even though it is DDR400(PC3200) it will clock down and work in yours.
But i just checked their web site again and the price changed just alittle.
This is what thay have...
(Corsair) 1GB SO-DIMM PC-3200 $47.99
it went up a few bux.
They also have their 512mb ddr400(pc3200) laptop ram for $27.99.
But their bigest price jump was with the pc-133 256mb laptop ram. It's up to $63.99.

I don't know if you've made the purchase yet or not ... probably, as this post was made a month ago ... but thought I'd give you some of my experience. I upgraded my RAM as well, went very smooth. But there's not much of a performance difference (if any) between 1.5 GB and 2.0 GB of RAM. So, if you've already got 512MB, just purchase one of the 1GB sticks and run it in conjunction with the current 512 ... the second 1GB stick is really unnecessary.SaberX wrote: Yep it's 1gig's.

I second that. I can see no performance difference between 1.5GB and 2GB. I have IBM labeled DDR 400 SODIMMS, and they work perfectly. A 7200 HDD is what made the biggest improvement in my X31.

It "can" make a difference although not immediately perceived and not in many cases depending of how intense are the tasks.losmeme wrote: no performance difference between 1.5GB and 2GB.
Example 1 : go on opening simultaneous web pages in Opera, or for that matter launch an entire saved Opera session with thirty or more windows like in typical research. In this case, the extra RAM might add a bit of relief to the system flow, relying less on the HD's page file.
Example 2 : you can try to either turn off Virtual Memory, or create a RAM Disk assigning temporary files to that. Some users claim to have succeeded in assigning also the page file to the RAM Disk. I tried but couldn't get XP to accept it. The key to that apparently is on the sizing of the page file.
Example 3: intense audio and video tasks which rely on HD speed. As long as the amount of RAM covers the space needed (easily done with audio) you can bypass the need of the physical HD and stick to a RAM Disk. Some programs use RAMby themselves.
You can capture DV video in segments which fit the RAM and then have them copied and stitched with the HD. This way, the need for a 7200rpm HD lessens.
Hope this helps, would love to hear experiences that diverge from mine.
Hmmm inconsistency in Max Ram for x31???
Hi Guys,
I have a X31 2672-CBG, which I thought I could upgrade to 2Gb of RAM but having just done a search on Kingston for the memory types it says it can only take 1Gb RAM but if I don't designate X31 2672-Cxx and leave it as X31 2672 it says it will take 2Gb...
So I am a little confused as to which I should go for... Is there a reason why my model couldn't take the extra Gb?
Many thanks,
Dan

Any X31 will take up to 2Gb of RAM, and will be very happy to do so...

Glad to hear that it will take 2Gb
Now just have to find a reasonable price for them in the UK...
Thanks again ajkula66,

For whatever reason, as far as PC2700 vs. PC2100 it's model dependent. See this chart.Mr.Marui wrote:Will any X31 take PC2700 2gb of ram?
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44049
With that said, see this chart (linked below) and note the comment - "PC2100 memory option parts are no longer available. Please substitute the corresponding PC2700 memory option parts."
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55644
Bottom line is use PC2700. Any X31 will take up to 2GB of RAM to the best of my knowledge.
Re: Thanks :D
I'd recommend Ebay if you use it. I purchased 2 x new Lenovo PC2700 333Mhz 1GB simms for £23.50 each.DannyE wrote:Glad to hear that it will take 2GbNow just have to find a reasonable price for them in the UK...
