T40 quick question
T40 quick question
Need to pick up a laptop today, have a T30 that I'm perfectly happy with. This ones for my son, college, T40 refurb is $459. Daughters T42 is new. Quality wise is the 40 a decent model ?
I alway try to go that extra mile at work, problem is the boss always finds me and brings me back
definitely, T40s are just as good as the T42 but just that the T42 added some speed benefits such as the Dothan CPU which just makes everything move better. You cna buy one and slap it into the T40 also, they are probably $50 for a 1.8Ghz or something now. PRobably better than the 1.3-1.5Ghz you get in the T40 by almost 2 folds.
Current - Thinkpad T410si - Core i3 330m, 4GB, 250GB 5400RPM, WXGA+, FPR, BT, Camera, DVDRW, Gobi2000, Win7 Pro x32

... consider a newer T41 or even a T42...?
Recently, another user asked in this forum for advice of buying a T40 versus a T42; if you want to read the comments to that, check the thread T40 1.3 or T42 1.5 with WIFI?. Without knowing anything about the specifications and remaining warranty etc. for the T40, you mention, the $459 for a refurb T40 may seem a little bit expensive, judging from e.g. eBay. There are many T42's selling for the same amount ("Buy It Now").
If you have the time, try post a "WTB" (Want to buy) in the Marketplace of this forum. Also, there is perhaps something to find at your local craigslist - such as e.g. this IBM Think Pad T41 - $400 in Philadelphia? More ThinkPad's in other cities in PA, e.g. this nice IBM Thinkpad X30 - $300 in Scranton?
Good luck!
Best regards,
Johan[/b]

This comes with a full warranty from IBM, it's an IBM refurb. Thats also good on the cpu upgrade, that sounds like an option. Does the recovery image on the disc handle the cpu change ? or do I have to do nothing other than swap the cpu's out and reboot ?
Picking up memory for it later, I just picked it up and it's updating now.
This is the third refurb, two T30's, I have picked up and as usual if I did not know it was a refurb I would swear it was new. Need to update that wireless card though to a B/G vs the B it is now.

- search, and ye shall find! :-)
If you refer to the recent thread: T40 - Banias to Dothan Upgrade - Details? you will find the answer there.richp wrote:... Thats also good on the cpu upgrade, that sounds like an option. If you Search the Tx4 forum for "T40 CPU upgrade" (and remember to "Search for all terms" you will find many threads discussing this, incl. New T40 owner, new upgrade race!!.
Congratulations with your "new" T40!
NB: Beware that if you upgrade the CPU yourself, you will probably void the warranty - as the CPU is not actually a CRU! (customer replaceable unit).
Best regards,
Johan
