T42 2373-JTU ** Is this a good deal ?

#1 Post by jo5h » Wed Nov 03, 2004 9:11 pm

I just got my new T42 2373-JTU that I ordered couple of weeks ago thru IBM direct and the configuration is nice except it has only XGA display. I wish I could upgrade to SXGA+, but there was no option to that. Anyhow, I got it for $1471.28 TAX included and free S&H.

IBM WEB price: $2149.00..
Specs: MODEL 2373-JTU
P M 735, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, IBM 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

l'm planning to return it and get one with SXGA+, (ie T42-2378-FVU) but it would costs more. Plus it has only 256MB RAM and 1 year warranty versus 512MB and 3 year warranty on 2373-JTU.

Comments will be greatly appreciated ! Thanks

Hi!,

$1471.28 TAX included and free S&H is a very good price for the JTU model. If you do not need the SXGA+ screen, this is rather close to a bargain price one can get. Btw, from where did you get this price?

... or are a lot of people returning their notebooks b/c they changed their minds or have a bad pixel or two or want the next newer model?

I'm coming from the Dell/Fujitsu camp (will get a T42 soon) and unless you had at least 5 or more dead pixels, you couldn't return it on that reason alone. Also, unless there was something wrong with your unit, you would still pay the return shipping fees (usually around $40).

I'm being a bit of a 'devil's advocate' but don't all these returns translate into higher costs for the rest of us?

On another note, I am impressed with IBM's build quality on their notebooks (especially the T's); they're definitely on another plane compared to Dell (I've owned/used Inspiron 8xxx, 600m, X200, X300, Latitude c610, D600, etc.).

Cheers!
