Increase CD-RW/DVD Read Speed?
I do not use the factory image of Windows XP + all the utilities IBM preinstall on the machine.
I'm wondering if the setting in BIOS where you set your optical drive speed works. whenever I put a DVD drive on my machine, the copying process is slow, even though I have selected in BIOS the max setting for the read rate, but in Windows the drive does not sound like reading at its max.
Any way I can improve the read speed rate?

Supposedly the Read Speed should be 8x for DVD's, but I'm getting 3X max. Do I need to install a certain IBM utility in Windows to make the change in speed work?
I believe I have DMA enabled on Windows, on both Primary & Secondary controllers.

Wait, are you using a regular from the store DVD-Video disc to do tests or DVD-Rs you burned or what? Because the read speeds varies depending on the type disc. Most of the time they just label the drive as:xtr wrote:Supposedly the Read Speed should be 8x for DVD's, but I'm getting 3X max. 24x (CD), 8x (DVD)
but fact is DVD-RW and DVD-RAM and in some cases DVD+R/-R and DVD-Video don't read at 8X speeds. It depends on the quality of the disc and therefore the quality of the burn. If there's a lot of error correction then it wont reach 8x. Try out other discs and what are you using anyways? Nero DVDSpeed or what?

I think it doesn't matter. I've tried playing some original DVD9 movies and the movie kinda is slow. If i install a game (San Andreas) it takes several minutes to transfer the files.
