I have an r50p running XP Pro and the internal speakers have quit working. External speakers or headphones plugged into the headphone jack work fine.
I have checked to make sure the mute is not on. I have also taken it apart and borrowed the internal speaker module from my t42p (that works) and still silence.
I figure it must the the motherboard unless thiere is an unknown to me setting in the sound control panel that can discriminate between the internal speakers and the headphone jack.
Any thoughts?

As you have already tested with another set of working speakers, it confirms the problem is not there.
The mute switch also is not at fault as it is meant for the whole system and not specifically for the speakers alone.
As you are able to hear the sound through external headphones, it means the amp section is also ok. Thus the motherboard's sound section seems to be ok.
The only possibility left is the headphone socket.
Actually when you put an external unit like headphone etc. into it, it plays the sound through them and at the same time it also works like a switch for the internal speakers and disconnects them. The internal speakers start to work again when the connection is removed. Probabely you are using that HPhone socket too much and it's switch has gone loose. Or may be somehow an odd/improper sized jack was pushed in by mistake and it has destroyed/loosened the switch.
I think this socket can be changed once the motherboard is in the out. You can even try to release the switch free by using a standard 1/8" headphone jack with sudden in and out movements.
