Fn+F5 issues

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Wed Oct 03, 2007 11:46 am

Not sure if this is an issue, but I can no longer bring up the wireless menu that allows to switch off or on wireless devices like bluetooth and the wireless card.
When I press it, it just automatically turns on and off the bluetooth. same thing for Fn F7.

Maybe i somehow disabled it? Help greatly appreciated.

Did you install/upgrade som software or drivers? Or did you uninstall some software? Done any changes since it the Fn-F5 was working? What kind of wlan adapter and what OS version do you use?
If you search on this board you will probably find a lot of suggestions and maybe the solution since this been discussed a lot of times before. Try searching for Fn-F5.

Maybe a reinstallation of the hotkey feature set and access connection might solve the problem. Might be a shared dll installed by ATT connection manager that is also used by the lenovo software and the one installed by ATT connection manager is another version. If a reinstalltion will fix Fn-F5 and break ATT connection manager i don't know:) The QCtray is installed by AC so maybe a reinstallation of AC is enough.

Try this link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OME-LENOVO

Use your type and model number and look for the AC in the "Downloads and drivers" tab.

I hope it helps.

You can also use this link which is a direct link to AC 4.42:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZLNJB

Make sure you read the requirements in case you previously had a old version of AC to make sure you have the correct version of hotkey feature set and wireless adapter driver as well. Unless you already have the latest versions i would recommend to update the wlan driver, then the hotkey features and then AC and do all the required reboots inbetween. Some recommend to uninstall before a reinstall of those components, but i never had a problem with the update to new versions of wlan adapter driver, hotkey feature set and AC. Just make sure the versions you use is supported by the version of AC you install.

Reviving a month old thread....

I made the critical, "d'oh!" mistake last night of running Lenovo's System Update and let it update many of the utilities, incl. Access Connections. I've done this before, paid the price, and I should'a known....

I lost control over the Wifi card. Light on, FN+F5 indicating it on, but trying to finding a network yielded "your radio is turned off, do you want to turn it on"; clicking Yes resulted in ... nothing. To fix it, I removed AC 4.42, rebooted, and installed 4.12, the last, known good (to me) version. No joy. Tried to uninstall the IBM a/b/g wireless card driver, the uninstaller stalled (!), and I had to hard reset, boot up, and over-install the previous, good version I had. Fixed.

Question: is 4.42 the possible culprit, i.e. did it update the wireless driver as well, or have others with the IBM Wifi card circa 2005 gotten good results with this new version? TIA....

Access Connections 4.42 works fine for me. Anytime I upgrade any hardware drivers Access Connections controls, I uninstall Access Connections first. These days, Access Connections does not include any wireless or wired LAN drivers (I know it did at one time 2 or 3 years ago).

I have not used System Update in over a year. I do not have it installed on my system. I'll let the rest of you be the guinea pigs for that software. If I ever hear enough good reports, then maybe I wil try it again.

I think I just may uninstall the dang thing. Last night, I couldn't open Power Manager (new version installed with System f'Update). FN+F3 brought up the FN+F5 utility! :? Strother Martin drawling, "What we have HERE, is a FAILURE to communicate" came to mind. Rolling back to Power Manager 1.13c fixed that.

Is there anything dramatically better in Access Connections 4.42 over 4.12?

I've read most of the threads on the FN-F5 problem and tried all the methods with no success. I don't even use Access Connection. I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 clean, and all the essential drivers from Lenovo. FN-F5 always says that it cannot change the power state of the wireless adaptor, and that I need to update the driver. But I am using the latest driver from Lenovo!

Any clue?

Fn+F5 ALTERNATIVE

#14 Post by sojourner » Tue Nov 27, 2007 10:49 am

This is an edited excerpt from my original post in:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

I struggled getting the fn+F5 hotkey to work when I first bought my laptop. Read the forums for solutions etc but still found no joy. Then, happened to stumble across a work-around. For those having trouble and wanting immediate access to turning the radio ON/OFF try this:

Do a file search on your computer for a file named TPFNF5.EXE (you MUST have installed the IBM Hotkey software, the file should reside in its directory) .

Double click the file. If it works, prompting you for action specific to your wireless, create a shortcut on your desktop or in Quick Launch (which I did). You'll then have immediate access to turning your wireless ON/OFF. Works great in lieu of fn+f5!

Fixed the problem! :D The key is installing the wireless driver using Software Installer instead of running the installer program within the driver folder.

Would you please give more detail? It may help fix the non-working Fn+F5 issue here!

So, after you download the relevant drivers from Lenovo.com and extract them to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ , the "normal" thing to do would be to go to where the driver was extracted, and run SETUP.EXE or something like that. Turns out that when you install the WLAN driver this way, the Fn+F5 doesn't work.

What you need to do is, uninstall the WLAN driver from Control Panel. Run the Hotkey installation program, but select Uninstall Existing Software and remove everything in the list. Reboot and cancel the Found New Hardware wizard. Install Software Installer (now a legacy software since it's been replaced by System Update which is useless). Then use Software Installer to install the WLAN and Hotkey drivers. Voila! Your Fn+F5 should work!

rhema83, tried your solution, but lo, no joy! Didn't work, hasn't worked and cannot figure out why. Thanks for posting the detailed explanation though!

For those in the same boat as me, the tip I gave earlier in the post may work for you, it does for me and is a very fast way to turn the wireless on/off with the mouse! Even if your Fn+F5 DOES work you may want to put the shortcut I described on your desktop or Quick Launch because it can actually be a faster, more convenient way to turn the radio on/off than releasing the mouse and fingering the KB!

FOLLOW-UP: since this post I finally figured out why Fn+F5 didn't work; the solution is found here
