A31p processor on an a30p

#1 Post by khamsin » Thu Nov 04, 2004 3:42 pm

Ummm,

I just read in a forum on another site that a processor from the A31p may actually fit (likely since form factor is the same) and work (this I find questionable as the A30p uses pIII mobile and the A31 pIV mobile.) If I am mistaken then I would really like to hear from others who have tried this and what measure of success they have had.

AFAIK the A30p's 133MHz FSB Intel 830MP chipset doesn't support a P4M CPU, you need the A31's Intel 845MP and its 400MHz FSB.

I could be wrong, but as this would be a very expensive experiment, particularly if it were to turn into a catastrophe, I'll leave the question for someone else to answer definitively.

I thought as much. On another site though they said, to paraphrase, yes go ahead and do it, let us know what happens. Brrrr... I shudder. I hope that the person whom received that advice did not follow up on it.

What would happen is that the magic smoke that makes a laptop run would escape!

I've actually seen this happen, most recently when the flyback on my old 21" monitor gave up the ghost and emitted a LARGE spark out of the top of the case. This pyrotechnic display was shortly followed by the magic smoke escaping from the monitor and slowly wafting out the open window.

James,

I guess nosmoke.exe is not compatible with your monitor VEG (very evil grin) (I guess the emoticons don't support this one.)

No seriously. I was certain it wouldn't work. It never hurts to try and get this sort of error cleared up. I'm hoping the person whom received the advice also frequents this forum an thereby read that it IS NOT POSSIBLE.

p.s. If this is considered noise I will refrain from producing more of it
