Screen issues that can be called Bizzare at best

#1 Post by tpmwr » Thu Oct 04, 2007 7:44 am

Alright, this issue is something that has had me confused for a few days now.

The other day I was using my t42, everything was fine and dandy. I went to tilt the screen forward for better viewing and all of a sudden the screen turned off. As I tilted it back and forth it would come one and off, but everything would be garbled.

I figured it was my screen ribbon and proceeded to purchase a new ribbon. My IBM ribbon arrived last night, and I installed it. But that didn't fix the problem, it only made it worse. Now the screen backlight comes on but nothing happens. If I tilt the screen I get the IBM bootup image, but in the wronge place, and it only flashes for a second, I cannot get anything to show up solid. I am confused as to what could be causing this if it's not the ribbon.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried plugging in an external monitor to see if it works that way? This will tell you if it is the LCD/ribbon cable or the video chipset causing the problem.

Sounds very familiar. I suggest reading 'Sticky: t42 shuts down when i move it:' in this forum. :-(

Did you get the right cable? My guess is the first cable failed and you replaced with the wrong one. SXGA+ and XGA are different.,

I just realized that. I got an XGA ribbon like an idiot, and this is a SXGA+ Monitor. I checked eBay and didn't have much luck, anyone know where I can find an SXGA+ ribbon?

I am assuming you have a 14" LCD. I have one here, but I keep one around for testing LCDs. I just looked at eBay for part number 91P6787 and this is the cheapest one:

Wow, thanks for the help richk. Gonna buy one of these tonight, just sent the seller a message asking if they can overnight it for me for a fee. Would love to have my thinkpad back before I leave town next week.
