help with T20 upgrade

#1 Post by MAXVAL » Thu Oct 04, 2007 1:14 pm

hello all.

i have a t20 with a 700 mhz cpu. did some hunting on this fantastic site and discovered i could upgrade to a 1000 mhz cpu. with a little elbow grease and some ebaying, i puchased and installed:

SL53S 1000 MHz cpu

26P8098 mobo

26P9254 heat sink

flashed the bios and everything came up. installed vista and was running at 700 and not 1000. i reset the bios to defaults, changed the speedstep and power saving features and still 700 mhz.

the bios reports 1000 mhz but vista seems to only see 700 mhz. any ideas fellas? i was thinking of reflashing the bios. also i confirmed the cpu speed with cpuid. am i missing an os setting?

thanks a bunch! :)

I'm guessing that Vista is only reading the "idle" speed of the 1Ghz cpu. Thats the Speed Stepting on the cpu.
Get a program like cpu-id and check to see what the cpu is running at. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Or moble metter will do the same thing.
Once it's open it may still only read the idle speed of 700mhz.
But just open a big program like Photoshop or MS Word and while it's opening look at the cpi-id and it should read the full 1Ghz.When the system is back to idle it will go back down.
This is what happens on the systems i have had.

This is quite normal. Only when there is a demand on the cpu it will raise the speed upto 1000MHz. Otherwise its normal speed is 700MHz.

Congratulations for the succesful cpu upgrade.

thanks guys! :)

i will look at the mhz later tonight when i put some load on the machine.

as for reflashing of the bios. i got this weird error. the non-disk flashing program stats power mgmt is turned off and doesn't continue. interesting....

i reset the bios and still the same problems. made sure in vista i was on balanced power profile and still. i wonder if i have a semi-corrupt bios? gonna pop out the battery tonight and see what happens.

thanks again everyone!

update...

pulled the battery out, left and ate some food. come back put the battery in. and boot up vista. i noticed right away a little more pep in the machine.

go to reflash the firmware and i get a different error. flash program tells me i dont need a flash. this is different from my power management being disabled.

go back to vista. check my mhz. and viola. its 1 ghz. or 995.9 mhz. lol.

thanks everyone for your ears and suggestions!
