What's wrong with my T43?

#1 Post by kidpaprika » Thu Oct 04, 2007 2:45 pm

A few days ago, my T43 started behaving a bit oddly. It kept sort of "freezing" in Windows - the mouse would become "jerky", i.e. the mouse would hang for a fraction of a second when I was trying to move it.

Over the last couple of days it has become worse - Windows started hanging up and the mouse freezing for much longer, until yesterday it started hanging up completely and I had to keep resetting Windows.

I had a lot of stuff installed on the computer and thought that perhaps a Windows re-install might "clean it up" and get things working again. However, I reinstalled Windows yesterday and the problem remained (in fact, it was worse). The computer just kept "stopping" and hanging up and the mouse stopped moving. It looked as though the hard disk stopped being accessed when this happened, too.

Tonight, it's gone a stage further and Windows won't boot at all. It freezes at the IBM Thinkpad bios window and doesn't seem to access the hard drive.....

I'm not sure what's wrong. I've got a "feeling" it's the hard drive. However, I don't want to spend money on a new hard drive only to discover that the motherboard or something is actually causing the problem, and I don't have a spare hard drive to test my theory out.

Does anyone have any advice? Any ideas what these symptoms suggest?

Thanks!
