[R60] Multimedia lockup

#1 Post by Fusion » Thu Oct 04, 2007 8:45 pm

My R60 has been troubling me recently.
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with audio and video, but it has occured a few times during video play on youtube, in WMP and when playing mp3s in winamp.
It just stalls, can't do anything, and I get that "broken LP" effect iow. 1s of the sound keeps repeating itself.
It hasn't happened when working in non-multimedia programs (yet).

I haven't installed any new hardware, did CleanUp! and disk defrag yesterday.
Any ideas on what could be wrong or tests I should run?

Not sure but DMA could be a cause:

DVDs are choppy.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Hi Fusion,

I too have had look ups, only while playing flash player in FireFox!

But nowhere else!

I think Firefox can´t handle Flash seriously.

I updated Firefox and did a fresh installation of FlashPlayer.

No more look ups recognized!

Your problem with mp´3s is another Problem, have you a video/audio codec pack installed!?
Uninstalling it, maybe solve your problem.

kind regards

Andreas

I would like to renew this topic because I may have found the problem.
Since my last post, the freeze has happened a couple times, sometimes playing video, sometimes working (ie. Photoshop).
But today I was playing COD4 a got this message durring the halt:

Code: Select all

*** Hardware Malfunction ***
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity check / Memory parity error
*** The system has halted ***
Therefor I think the problem could be with the Kingston 1GB RAM addon I bought a while back.
Before installing the extra RAM, the problem never happened.

My question: is the memory dead and thus I should go return it to the store or is the memory a type that the R60 doesn't support and even if I get a new one, it might keep halting?

Memory: Kingston KVR667D2S5/1G, 1GB PC2-5300, CL5 200pin SODIMM.

Thanks for your answers!

While we're at it, I could buy a 2GB, but I'm not sure exactly what to buy.

Lenovo's specifications:
• PC2-5300 Non-Parity (NP) Double Data Rate Two (DDR2) Technology
The use of 667 MHz SO DIMM memory is recommended for this system.
• 256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB standard memory
• Supports maximum memory up to 3GB
- Recommended for memory expansion are 2 GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM 533 MHz SO DIMM or 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz SO DIMM.

Can I buy a CORSAIR SO-DIMM DDRII 2GB 667Mhz?
What is the difference between PC2-4200 and 5300 (and/or 533/667Mhz, CL4/5)?
Non-ECC = non-parity?

at Fusion. Download memtest+ and test each stick separately and see if your stick is bad or not. Hopefully they are under warranty..
