$920 T61 7658-CT0 - Did I get a deal or did I get burned ?

#1 Post by vme2mopars » Fri Oct 05, 2007 12:54 am

I purchased a T61 model 7658-CTO, from the pool of In-Inventory Machines that IBM had listed on their website as "Clearance" machines. I bought this machine shortly before IBM ran out of these machines. I was told that a few machines didn't make it on the PDF that was on the website. An IBM CSR looked this machine up for me, because all my other selections were no longer in stock.

My only requirements was that the machine would be less than $950, have at least a T7300 C2D, 1gig of ram, and an 80GB hard drive. The CSR said that the machine he found had a T7500, 1 gig of RAM, and a 100gig HD- for around $920(w/o taxes or shipping). I bought it.

I'm very happy with the machine, but I didn't get any documentation with the machine. The packing slip just had my order number, the machine model of 7658-CTO, and my billing address. None of the detailed specs. I purchased another CTO machine, and its packing slip is far more detailed.

I went into the ThinkVantage and pulled out the parts list, which is below. Is there anyway that I can get a detailed breakout on how my machine is equipped ?

For example, I want to know if I can burn CD's with the DVD/CD player that came with my machine. When I did a search on the FRU number below, some places list the drive as a CDRW/DVDRW and some places just list it as a DVD/CD player with no RW abilities.

Lastly, I'm happy with the machine, but I'm curious as to whether or not this CTO machine was a good deal ? For roughly $975 to my door with taxes, no wait on build, does it look as though I did okay ?

Thanks.

FRU# 39T2681 is a 8/24X DVD-ROM DRIVE and it does not burn CD/DVD's.

You can do Parts Lookup (also explained the FAQs of this forum), I think which you already did, but do a search on the Service part numbers afterwards on lenovo.com.

I believe the dvd you have is a Panasonic UJDA775 which read DVDs and write CDs.

Sorry Steve but that's not true:

Service parts list index - ThinkPad.

A CD-RW/DVD does that.

@steveg47: There appears to be two drives with very similar part numbers; UJDA775 (FRU 39T2685), a CDRW/DVD combo drive and UJDA775DVD (FRU 39T2681), a simple DVD only drive. This is information from the T61 Service Parts page.
