SI Lovers: Beware of Hard Sunset !! [PIC]

#1 Post by uberT » Fri Oct 05, 2007 5:57 pm

While the term "hard sunset" is new to me, I have the sense that it's a poison pill that permanently puts our beloved Software Installer to sleep. It got one of our machines today during routine updates...I missed the file being installed.

The other machine now gives a warning message that says:

"This program does not support this system." :(

Software installer has been replaced by System Update 3

Yes, thanks. I'm well aware of that. Many have commented in the past that SI is a better system and SU3 isn't really an upgrade :(

Well, if you were aware of it then why were you asking about the message "This program does not support this system.". SI has been sunset (no longer supported on your systems).

Should SI be uninstalled?

Should SI be uninstalled? and if so, why didn't the system do it automatically for me? I find it a bit confusing.

Thanks!

If you receive the pop-up window stating that SI is no longer supported, manually uninstall it via the Add/Remove Software applet in the Control Panel. Since it no longer works, there's no point in leaving it intact on your machine.

Harry, I wasn't "asking" about it. We have several IBM machines and one of them got the updater file that killed that program. I posted this so others could avoid downloading the file if they wish to continue using SI.

IMO, SI is a far more valuable tool than SU3.

Let's all pray that SU3 improves rapidly. Software Installer did work rather well.

I attempted to re-install Software Installer yesterday on one of our machines (the one that receveived the "sunset" file) and it still will not run. The program appears to re-install but I just get a warning message when I attempt to start the program.

I just ran Software Installer to check, and it pulled up a couple of updates I have not installed yet (getting lazy). So Software Installer still works. The question is if it will be able to find updates since the hard sunset.

If you wish to get it working again, you can either search the registry and delete all references to Software Installer and hope you didn't miss any, or you can use Windows System Restore to roll back your system.

Thanks, I was thinking about doing that, searching the reg, that is.

I really like SI as it permits you to quickly view version info and remove items quickly. Does SU have the ability to check version info?
