Taking All Reasonable Offers: My X40 for $500 or T4x or R5x
Hello all...seeing this forum for the first time tonight, I'm a first time poster on the boards here. The reason? I'm trying to make a trade on my current laptop for something a bit more...I've tried posting to notebookreview.com, anandtech.com, and hardforum.com, but to no avail....I was told to come here to find folks that meant business.
What I've Got:
An IBM Thinkpad X40. It's loaded down with 1.25GB in ram, and sports a 1.4 GHz Pentium M. It's got built-in Intel PRO Wireless, thus the Centrino badge it bears. The graphics card is only an Intel Extreme 2, but it does the job (it runs Half-Life and UT 03 at tolerable, but not full settings). The HDD is a 40GB Hitachi TravelStar. The screen is 12 inches, 1024x768 VGA. It weighs less than three pounds by itself...no joke! It's still under warranty until early next year, PM me for the S/N if you want to check the service tag yourself. [Edit: I checked the service tag...warranty's good until effing March of 2008! Six more months of warranty, at your service!]It also has the extended battery, which almost doubles its intended capacity. For serious, on low settings, I can get And that's not all...included is also the media slice, which doubles your available USB, while adding VGA-out, PS/2, parallel, and even a serial ports (as if you'll need it anywhere besides using your old controllers or talking to your server). It also has a CD/DVD combo drive on it (which can be swapped out for an Ultrabay device such as a DVD-RW drive, second HDD, or additional battery).
What I Want:
A well-equipped IBM Thinkpad T42 or better. (Or an Apple...but I'm pretty sure I'm reaching there, lol) I was working with a guy who was possibly going to do a T41, but seeing as how the soonest I'll be able to ship is October 12th, I wanted to see what my options here would be (This forum comes highly reccommended from notebookreview.com...they say you guys are the final word on all things Thinkpad, and I've had a great time finding that they were very much correct...many props to the tech vets passing on the priceless gift of knowledge). The reason I want to trade off my X40 is because even though it's light, I need something a bit more powerful. That, and having the keyboard just a little bit wider or having the optical drive attached just seem to be creature comforts for me at this point. I got the X40 thinking it wouldn't be a big deal not having my optical at all times, but docking and undocking is just something I really don't like to do if I can avoid it.
Exceptions:
If you have a laptop of Thinkpad caliber that's still comparable even if it's not listed under what I'm asking...I wanna know about it. Send me a message. I really don't want to sell outright but I'll entertain offers. If your rig's better than my rig, I'm more than willing to pay the difference. To sell outright, $500, but I could be swayed otherwise dependent upon terms. I've also got things here and there that could be traded into the deal one way or another...
The Rules:
1. I WILL NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SOMEONE I HAVE NOT SPOKEN WITH. In short, be prepared to offer a phone number. I'm more apt to take a man/woman's word as their bond once I've heard it with my ears.
2. If your heat is 50 or better, I will httpship first. Otherwise, we will ship at the same time, meaning we will exchange tracking numbers the day of. If you don't have heat 50 or better and still want me to ship first, you had better have ridiculous eBay feedback and be able to prove it.
3. Don't crap my thread. Those who do so will have the favor returned in kind.
Contact Me:
I prefer email communication. My email address is mr_gollihue@hotmail.com. I check it frequently throughout the day, and it is the best way to reach me, hands down. I know that we're not supposed to have a nondescript email like hotmail, but that's just the easiest one for me to check...don't message me at rock.com, I don't ever check it. You can PM me as well, but I'd really prefer an email. If your deal sounds like something I'd like, we'll exchange phone numbers and talk turkey.
I have no heatware yet, but hope to change that here! I am registered with the username mr_gollihue Any trader who does business with me will be left feedback that is relative to the transaction...and I'm hoping said trader does the same.

Sorry for the blurry photos and the wrong timestamp...my camera keeps dying and going back to default settings because I keep turning it on to take one picture at a time on these guys. And that's a smudge on the top of the lid...I cleaned it off and it's all good now. There are two bright spots on the lcd...I ran pixelbuddy and I got no bad pixels...just a couple of bad patches of light coming through is all.
Thanks for looking!

yep...you and everyone else who'll admit it to themselves...this machine is like a well-equipped midsize battle tank...not quite as beastly and domineering as a R or T series, but enough of a threat to be much more capable than any other mainstream crap (excluding an apple, who is right on par).
Thinkpads are a status symbol...like wearing Saville Row, driving Mercedes Benz, or drinking Bordeaux, they immediately define class. they'll make that smarmy eff sitting next to you at Starbucks checking his stocks on his iPhone ess a brick...the profoundly simple, yet elegant no-nonsense design of the Thinkpad commands respect, even if it might not turn heads.
yeah...that was a rant. but buy my Thinkpad (or trade me for a bigger one). if i didn't have gorilla paws that wouldn't fat-finger the keys, i'd keep it myself.

PRICE DROP! Or will take lower than a T42, depending on circumstances.

I just wanted to add that I spoke to mr_gollihue the other night to possibly work out some kind of trade, and two things became apparent to me. First he's a nice, honest guy and very pleasant to speak to on the phone. Second that his X40 is without question a great laptop for someone looking for a later model X thinkpad with some warranty left. Even though our deal didn't work out I just wanted to wish you luck
.

thanks for the kind words, harry.
for anyone wondering how this guy does business, he's a class act...very straightforward, to the point, nothing to hide. i like traders like that...who lay it all out without the b.s. i've negotiated a similar deal with George (ajkula66) who was similar to harry...great with communication, kept me in the loop.
and although neither of these deals worked out for other reasons, i would not hesitate to deal with either of these gentlemen in the future.
