Problem with ThinkVantage System Update

#1 Post by icedgreentea » Sat Oct 06, 2007 9:50 am

Hi all

I noticed a week back that when I tried to run my System Update, the entire application would crash and I couldn't access any updates. I kind of ignored this, hoping that it would go away. I just tried it again but I got the same message, where a Windows box pops up saying that the program encountered an error and that the program needs to be closed. I currently have TV Update 3- Think. Any suggestions on where to start in fixing the problem? Thanks.

The Lenovo System Update is known to cause trouble for many users (and/or just don't work for others). I suggest you completely uninstall it, and if you need updates, then get the previous program: "Software Installer", as suggested in the thread: Is it me or is System Update 3 rubbish?! (see the post of Wed Oct 03, 2007 9:48 pm). Also see the thread Slow boot problem and solution. There is some indication of that furthermore T60's appear to be troubled by System Update - see T60 Startup Freeze - Explorer.exe just stops responding.

A new System Update seems to be in the pipeline - lets see if it turns out to be better (it can hardly be worse!)

Please report back if you uninstall System Update, and your problem(s) disappear. Thank you.

Best regards,

Johan

Software Installer is now officially dead. I went to use it last night and it turns out it is no longer supported. They recommend that all users move to Software Update.

This is a stupid move. Software Installer is a simple way to get all of the necessary updates. Software Updater is nothing but a piece of unreliable bloatware.

Oh well. Yet another bad turn taken by Lenovo.....

It wasn't easy, but I got Thinkvantage System Update to work on my T42. Here's what I did:

1. Uninstall IBM Update Connector (causes a conflict).

2. Manually download the latest version of Thinkvantage System Update and install it.

3. Run Thinkvantage System Update. This now worked flawlessly for me to update all the drivers.

Let us know if this works for you.

Can you offer some help on removing Update Connector? I don't see it in Add/Remove Programs. When I try to install the new System Update, it errors that *A Versiob of IBM Update Connector or System Update has been detected on your system.* And then I can't get System Update to install.

Any help?
Regards,
Larry

Ok, so I uninstalled Thinkvantage Syst Update and manually downloaded it to install again... I'm still getting the same error message. How does one uninstall the IBM Update Connector? I'm not sure how to find it..

Have you had the system board replaced recently? If the unit serial number was not put into the BIOS, or if it's incorrectly entered (e.g. missing a character), than you will receive this message.

Speaking from experience of course.

It appeared in Add/Remove Programs on my machine. May I suggest downloading Update Connector manually and installing it. This will sometimes permit you to remove it with Add/Remove Programs.

Sorry about the delay in replying -- I didn't see your question.

Thanks

You should find IBM Update Connector in the following directory. Run setup.exe there to reinstall IBM Update Connector.

C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\UPDATER\setup.exe

You won't find it on IBM or Lenovo's website. It has not been used for some time.

I just went through this. It is not directly in the add/remove list. You have to click on change/remove for Access IBM, then IBM gives you a separate add/remove screen for its components. It is there. Takes a few minutes to uninstall, but it works.
