TP Track point non-functional in XP safe mode

I updated my X61s yesterday with all of the Lenovo updates (including a new Track point update) and noticed that when I booted to safe mode, the track point no longer worked. I had to restore my system to an earlier time point (used Acronis TI 10 that I had made a week ago) and everything is fine again. Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a solution other than not to update the software? Thanks.
