USB 2.0 failure

#1 Post by rich1013 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 12:42 am

Hey all,
I have been a loyal Thinkpad user for three laptops now. This is my first post here and hope ya'll can help. My USB ports (2.0) have some how reverted to old USB 1.1 ports. When I plug in any type of USB storage device (USB powered HDD, Flash Drive, Card Reader, etc.) they all now get a message something like "device would perform better in a Hi-Speed plug" or something like that. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the related USB drivers. What I keep finding is posts online saying that I may have fried my USB 2.0 controllers. I've gotten a USB PCMCIA card and it's great and all, but it does not provide enough power for my USB HDD, besides, I hate having that thing sticking out the side of my laptop. Any ideas, or am I gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard?

Hello welcome aboard.

Did you properly uninstall/reinstall the USB Drivers for your T40? If not then you can try this:

1) Download intel chipset drivers

Code: Select all

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=939&DwnldID=8178&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng
2)Unplug all your USB devices

3)Go Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus controllers

4)Expand the list, uninstall ALL the devices (USB Universal Host Controller, USB Root Hubs, etc.). Don´t restart.

5)Install the chipset drivers.

6)Restart windows.

This worked on a Thinkpad T41, hope it helps you.
