X40 display brighter than X61s ultralight display?

I have an X61s and an X40. The X40 display is super bright. I noticed it was easily useable outside in the shade. The X61s with ultralight display is not as bright... although its been cloudy since I got it so cannot test outside in the shade.

I was wondering if anyone else might have found this to be true?

Hmm, that doesn't sound right. I hope you're wrong, because I love my X61s

In any case, I don't really mind very much. I never use the laptop in very sunny places, and I prefer lower brightness (it's easier on the eyes and yields better battery life).

Let me know if you test this again, because I'm still curious.

I find that my X61s with UltraLight display is too bright on max brightness. I usually have it 5 notches lower from the max.

Yep, you can say that again. IMHO, from the machines I've seen, displays were generally better(in a brighter sense) in IBM days. No doubt, ultralight is an innovative technology but still a marketing gimmick and yes I'm speaking from my 1st hand experience.

Flexview was an exception though which unfortunately lenovo couldn't continue offering.

Ok, figured it out. Just a problem on battery power. The X40, I went into the Thinkpad Configuration utility and set it to keep the display bright on battery. There is no Thinkpad Configuration utility under Vista so I couldn't do that on the X61s. I did change something in the power scheme that I thought did the same, but it didn't. I had to boot into the bios to set it. Now the X61s stays super bright on battery power.

Unfortunately there isn't any Thinkpad Configuration utility released for newer versions of *61 machines regardless of OS (Windows XP or Vista). If it matters anything to you, the option you chose in the BIOS to increase the brightness will consume battery power more quickly.
