New ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software - Problems

#1 Post by Roadster » Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:31 am

I just updated the Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software to version 5.6.2, and I'm having some problems with it.

For some reason, where the old program used to simply pop up the Swipe Finger prompt, the new program now pops up another intermediate prompt, saying "Please Wait... Or press CTRL-ALT-DEL to logon using a password". The only way I can reestablish access to the computer is to use CTRL-ALT-DEL, hit enter (acknowledging pre-entered info), and THEN swipe my finger over the fingerprint reader. Seems like a bunch of additional, wasted steps are now replacing what used to be a simple finger swipe before.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'd like to get back to where I just have to swipe a finger, like before.

Is there a way to correct this? Maybe my settings simply need to be altered.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thinkpad Fingerprint Reader Update

#2 Post by Mic1 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 11:24 am

I'm not having a problem with the reader, however since I updated to 6.2 whenever I check for new updates the old update option appears (V 5.6.1.3419). I've uninstalled both and reinstalled back one at a time, rebooted and the updater still continues to show 5.6.1.3419. I guess I will just have to hide the update to get rid of it. :( Has anyone had the same issue? My fingerprint reader works fine.

Thx,
Mic1

@ Mic yes I am seeing the same effect where System update wants to install the older software. Personally I'm not using System update because it is not reliable in my opinion at this point. At least for my T60p

I am experiencing the same problem with ver. 5.6.2 that Roadster mentioned in the 1st post of this thread.

I think there is a bug in the software.

At bootup, I also receive the "Please wait ..." box. Wait for what? ... nothing happens unless you enter CTRL-ALT-DEL. This is unintuitive, and adds unnecessary steps to the login process. I can't find any configuration settings to change this undesirable behavior.

@Roadster
A friend of mine had a similar problem with an older version and i do believe he changed something in the CSS to solve the problem since he preferred to use fingerprint only. I assume you also have CSS installed?
Anyway i use version 5.6.2 and Windows XP with no such problem.

Mic1 and DAH, I also noticed the same problem with System Update continually showing the old revision of the Fingerprint software.

iminj, thanks for confirming my initial bug report. Unfortunately, I can't find any configuration settings in either Client Security Solution or the Fingerprint software to eliminate the problem.

Wiz, can you please contact your friend and find out what settings he changed to solve the problem? I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks.

Thanks Wiz:

Maybe the problem is the interaction between ThinkVantage Fingerprint (I have 5.6.2 - Build 3650) and Client Security Solution (I have ver. 7.00.0022.00).

I wonder if Roadster and others with this problem are using the same 2 versions.

To try to fix this, I went into Fingerprint to re-enroll my fingerprints and selected the option to enable power-on security. Then, I went into CSS7 > Advanced > Manage Security Policies. In the Policy Manager, I selected "Custom" > Edit Custom Policy. In the subsequent box, I have checks in the box "Protect with a Fingerprint", and also in the Additional Options box.

Unfortunately, at the next re-boot, the problem persists.

Yes, those are the exact two software revisions that I have running, too.

Well I also have 5.6.2 - Build 3650 BUT I have Client Security Solution (I have ver. 8.00.0311.00) and that just might be the source of the problem, is that build still supported? I didn't think so, you've got the private disk as well don't you?

Yes, and I noticed that person also didn't find an answer.

I was thinking about uninstalling Fingerprint 5.6.2 and replacing it with the previous version (which worked perfectly for me), but I can't find a download link for anything except 5.6.2. If anyone can point to an earlier download link, please post it.

Another idea I have is to update CSS from version 7 to version 8. I haven't done it yet, but while reading the Lenovo MIGR page for CSS8 (MIGR-46391), I found the following information about halfway down the page:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Consider the following when using this code:

* Client Security Solution 8.0 is not integrated with ThinkVantage Productivity Center 1.0. ThinkVantage Productivity Center users should update to ThinkVantage Productivity Center 2.0 or later for the best user experience.
* Client Security Solution 8.0 only supports ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software Version 5.6.
* Refer to the "Client Security Solution Readme" file links above for installation instructions and considerations.
* If you want to use a Smart Card as an authentication device, refer to Using smart cards with Client Security Solution 8.0."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Makes me wonder - if CSS8 only supports Fingerprint 5.6, does this mean that CSS7 and Fingerprint 5.6 are incompatible? It's not clear to me.

@iminj
Maybe the problem is fingerprint sw 5.6.2 and CSS 7.x as you said. I been using the fingerprint software for a long time now and used about every version since that day. Never had any issues like this, but didn't use CSS at the time. Now i use CSS 8.x (the latest version) and fingerprint software 5.6.2 without any issues, but i never used CSS 7.x. I also used CSS 8 with the previous version of the fingerprint sw without any problems.
Would be interesting if someone with this problem could try CSS 8.....not sure if a upgrade or uninstall of CSS 7 before a installation of CSS 8 is the best option. For those that might miss privatedisk maybe CSS 8 and truecrypt might be an option? I use full disk encryption software so don't need or want privatedisk.

@Roadster
He said he did some changes to make it work with fingerprint only, but maybe i got it wrong and what he actually did was a upgrade to CSS 8.....no sure, but i'll check and post here.

If anyone want the previous versions of the fingerprint software you can find version 5.6.1.3419 and 5.6.0.3307 here (at the bottom of this page):
Fingerprint Software

I also got version 5.4.0.2659 and can post it somewhere if someone need even older versions of the fingerprint software.

No problems here between 5.62 & CSS 8/x, except the updater continues to find and display previous version. Besides hiding the update, how can I have it removed as a optional update? :help:

Yeah i already read that you had no problems with the fingerprint sw 5.6.2 and CSS 8, but would still be interesting to see if those using CSS 7 can solve their problem with a upgrade. Regarding the system update finding the previous version of the fingerprint software that is a problem with system update and not the fingerprint software. I suggest you create a separate thread for that issue, but i guess the only solution is to hide it until a new version of system update is available. I think system update is horrible so don't use it and have no idea what you can do to solve the problem.

Actually, milstein's 3-step problem solving attempt in post #5 on that thread completely solved the problem for me. You might want to try that.

8) SOLVED for me !! :D

Thanks to Roadster and milstein for proving that Fingerprint 5.6.2 and CSS7 are compatible if you follow milstein's 3-step solution. It works!

This solution saved me from spending a couple of hours updating CSS7 to CSS8; (and also having to update Rescue & Recovery from ver. 3.1 to 4.1 due to file dependencies).

Thanks again.
