HELP Reinstalling OS on a computer with expired XP

#1 Post by dtzihe » Tue Oct 09, 2007 2:09 pm

Hello all,

I built a new computer and installed a pirated copy of Windows XP on it. That XP could not be activated and is now expired. So, I decided to buy "XP for system builders" (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows ... 291&sr=8-2)

The problem is that I am now locked out of my computer and so I cannot access the CD. And when I boot my computer with the CD inside, my computer just ignores it and goes directly to the XP Activation Screen.

Any ideas on what I could do to install my new copy of Windows? I have an idea to change the boot sequence to boot from CD, but I forget how to do that.

Thanks!

I don't think this is the right place to ask for help with problems caused by illegal software even if you finally got yourself a legal copy which you obviously bought only because you failed to activate the illegal copy.

At least he is making it legal instead of asking how to crack it.

Here is how to do it.
Press "delete" or whatever to get into your bios and set the boot order to cdrom first. Sometimes F8 will also let you select a temporary boot device.
Boot up to your XP cd, tell it to install on top of your existing installation, choose the repair installation, not the recovery console. This will install the base XP system leaving most of your applications intact and it will ask for the Key code for the new XP, then you can activate it and get back to computing.
If that won't work you will just have to wipe out your old install and reinstall with the new media.

Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.

I am sorry I mispoke. My English is not so good and I confused the meaning of "pirated". What I meant was that someone else pirated my copy of XP.

I got it to work by changing the boot sequence. Thanks!
