My T41p has been getting slow

#1 Post by Likvid » Wed Oct 10, 2007 4:25 am

I bought a new T41p in 2004 and the laptop is always on and i rarely travel with it.

The problem i have been experiencing the last year or even longer is that despite reinstallation of XP several times the hardrive seems to be a lot slower than before.

I have run some tests to check the drive but there are no reported problems, however i think it swaps alot from time to time which it never did before.

My question would be, does laptop drives need to be replaced to get up to performance again after a while?

I have the IBM 60GB 7200rpm drive.

Download a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturers website and test the drive extensively.

Not in my experience (extensive over the years). If the hard drive has no errors, then it is not slowing down.

Slowdowns come from inappropriate Windows settings, spyware and viruses, setting all applications to do automatic updates, insufficient memory (not enough in the first place, or memory gone bad). ... JDH

True, you might consider a full backup/reinstall of the operating system / programs. But first download Hitachi Drive Fitness Test software and run complete test on the drive at least 3 times to see if you get a error code.

This might look simple, but it helped me.

Run chkdsk / r from a windows recovery console.

Ok thanks for everything, i have done several re-installations but the system gets slow after a week or two.

Anyway i was thinking of replacing the CPU and upgrading the memory.

I have the 1.7GHz Banias now and only 512MB RAM.

I would get the 2GHz Dothan and 2GB RAM.

Would i notice a big jump in performance doing this upgrade?

And the second question would be, can it handle Vista after the upgrade or will it be slow?

I think the 1.7Ghz Banias is the fastest CPU a T41 could ever take.

Yes 2GB ram will make a noticeable difference. If I were you, I would keep the 512MB stick and add another 1GB.

Yes you are right about the memory, waste of money buying two 1GB stick just for 512MB more....

Anyone know for sure about the CPU upgrade? i thought i read here that it's possible to upgrade to the Pentium M 755?

Someone did it with their T40 i know of.

Pentium M 765 - Dothan 2.1GHz is the largest CPU a T41 will take.

Here is an article where they upgraded the CPU to Dothan in a T41P.

Sorry about the wrong information. And thanks for the link! I'm going to replace the CPU in my T43 next week. Nice to know it's not really necessary to remove the LCD assembly.

Make sure your hard drive is not using PIO mode.

This fixed my T41P !!!!! my IDE 1 was in PIO mode, IDE 2 was fine. My system had been slowing down also for the last couple of weeks and now it is back to "normal" Thanks for the find.
