T20 loads to windows and then cuts off

#1 Post by ginsu213 » Wed Oct 10, 2007 4:22 pm

I took it apart yesterday to change the screen inverter and the screen cables and had to take off the cpu heatsink fan assembly to get the screen out. Now the laptop comes on, loads to windows then shuts off shortly after loading. Tried with the power cord without the battery and vice versa. The heatsink had a rubber thermal compound on it and I wiped it clean and used as-5 so I dont really know if the hs is making good contact with the cpu. I dont know if I should have replaced the rubber thermal stuff or not. I just thought that might have something to do with it. I am really clueless if that is not the problem. Welcome to the forum!

When you had the fan removed, were the contacts dirty? Did any AC5 get on them?

no the contacts werent dirty and I dont think I got any as5 on them but the fan comes on. Did I need to keep that little rubber padding on the heatsing to make better contact with the cpu?

Keeping that one would have been advisable, since there is a bit of a gap between the fan and the CPU. You might want to look into getting another fan, with the pad still attached...possibly a T22 fan, incase you decide to upgrade the CPU later to a 1.0GHz...

It could very well be, since it sounds like an overheating issue. The fans are cheap, so it wouldn't cost too much to find out. If I had a spare one, I would send it your way...

Thats very kind of you. But if that is not the problem what else might I try? Also I have seen the heatsink assemblies on eb_y for really cheap but none specifically for the t22 , where might I find one for the t22 for cheap? And is there anything I can get locally to replace that rubber stuff like at radio shack or somewhere?

Take a look at the hardware maintenance manual, to get the part number for a T22 fan, and search ebay for that (Yes, you can type "ebay"...since I noticed that you had an underscore in there)...

Thank you very much for the quick responses and suggestions they are very helpful. But is there anywhere I can get that rubber pad or something like it that will work until I can find another hsf assembly with the pad still intact?

Not that I am aware of. You don't want to add too much AC5, because I have heard that it will have the reverse effects.

Also, you don't want to keep using it, until AFTER you get the fan in place. It will eventually destroy your CPU, and possibly the entire system. For example, the heat can destroy the CPU, which is an abvious result. Now a second potential result could be that when the CPU dies, the system could be in the process of reading the BIOS, and could cause permanent damage to your BIOS by losing power during the BIOS. Make sense?

If you took the rubber pad off of the heatsink, your computer is more than likely shutting down due to heat. Removing the rubber heatsink material leaves a fairly large gap between the heatsink and CPU, a gap way too large to be bridged with AS5.

If you don't have the rubber thingie anymore, I'd take it all apart and wipe the AS5 off everything (it may start oozing off the CPU onto the MoBo), and then look for a new fan before using again.

If you DO still have the rubber thingie, I'vd had success reusing it. Place the rubber material on the CPU, being careful to line the indentation on the rubber up with the top of the CPU and then installing the heatsink on top of it. You don't need AS5 when using the rubber material.

I've used a T22 fan (with AS5) in my T20 before and they work great. It is of a different design, and does not use the rubber material. (The metal makes direct contact with the CPU.)

I see there is 2 different part numbers for the T22 hsf. Does it matter which one I get? Part#08k7268 and #26P9317. I have found the 26p9317 for a reasonable price and just need to know if this one will work before I order it. Thanks in advance
