Have you considered getting the X6*? Better in every way, much easier to find, and not much more expensive.

Gotta agree with pianowizard - I was posting on here trying to find a X31 or X32 with a 1.7 or greater CPU and after a month or so of no responses, got an X61. Very happy with the decision. I got a good deal at the Lenovo site on a close out model (in my sig, originally had 1 gig of ram) for $692 + tax = $734 - not too much more than an X32 has been going for on eBay...and they are a rare bird...

Yes I'm sure. X6x does not have stereo line input.

I'll be controlling it with an X60 Tablet using Remote Desktop.

It will replace an A31 on the road to save weight.

The upside of the X6x going so cheap is it will drive the X32 prices down.

My two cents . . .

1) Lots of X31s in the condition you describe, with the specs you want, will sell for $350 or so. Given how rare the X32s are, finding someone who's willing to part with theirs for what you want to pay is going to be tough. I wish you the best of luck, of course, but my guess is you'll be waiting a while.

2) If you anyone can get me an X61 today for $700, I've got cash in hand. The deals that Lenovo had going in early October were so good that they went ridiculously fast. They've also been slow to fill orders. I bought an X60 during that depot clearance sale (on Oct. 12, to be exact), and I'm still waiting for it. And the price was a good bit higher than what Wolfman got his for. (Nice going, bro!) The point here is that I don't think the prices on X6x machines are plummeting quite as fast as you suggest. Consequently, the downward pressure on well-spec'ed X31s and X32s is somewhat limited. After all, those systems will do what many people need from a computer.

I'm asking for a stripped down model for that price. I don't think that's unreasonable. Lots of X31s on ebay for $350 with all the bells and whistles. I have lots of Ultrabay drives, 7200 HDs, etc. I would max out the RAM anyway, so why would I want to pay extra for a 512 stick? I just want good cosmetics, built in WIFI, and a good solid working motherboard. If some of the other stuff is there, I have offered extra money for that.

X32s are rare because they have not past the 3 year mark yet. When they start coming off lease, they will be around.

I need the LINE INPUT jack. That is my main reason for going wiht this model. The 1.6 X31 just doesn't seem like enough of a boost over my A31 with 2.2Ghz, to justify replacing it.

I'me still able to use the A31, but in 5 years from now it will probably be obsoleted. I just want to have whatever I get to last as long as absolutely possible. Since these models have soldered on CPUs, there is no option to upgrade. My A31 originally came with 1.6GHz. Upgrading the HD, and CPU have made a huge difference and kept this old girl running strong.

Just a thought, but have you checked out the Creative line of notebook sound cards? They provide optical out and in and may meet your needs assuming you don't already have plans for your cardbus slot.

I was sort of curious about such a device myself. Seems like it might be an easier solution and open up options for selecting a system based on other criteria (price, performance, etc).
