T60 (2007MS2) screen resolution changing when closing lid

#1 Post by benz » Sun Oct 14, 2007 1:42 pm

I think this has been posted here before, but there seemed to be no clear resolution to this issue:

When I close my lid (I have it set to "Do nothing" in the power manager), the resolution will change...looks like it goes to SVGA or something lower. This is annoying for several reasons, mainly that it sometimes will not reset back to SXGA+ after I leave it closed for longer periods, and I have to go to the display properties and manually change it back.

As a side note, this has been my worst experience with a Thinkpad. I had a T42p (2373GVU) before, and it was an absolute dream. Still runs great, although I sold it to a family member since the new school I am at requires we all use these standard issue T60's. I am very unfamiliar with all of the domain/systems management stuff they have running in the background, but I do know that it runs significantly slower and more erratic than my T42p. I would love to format it and reinstall from scratch like I've done with many systems in the past, but that would violate code and I would not be able to use the network at school...oh well. :(

did you pay for the T60 or is it on loan?   if you own it then you should have the right to do a clean installation then get your connections straightened out with your school's IT department.

i don't know what's causing your screen reset issue.   a clean install very well may fix it.

they have a weird policy...we technically don't own these computers until we graduate, but the cost of the computer is included in tuition, which i am of course paying regularly

i've asked a couple of the cool guys in computing who say i am free to do just about whatever i want, but they will not allow me on the school network without being fully compliant

What does 'fully compliant' mean?

basically that you login to a domain, you run their antivirus (which is a terrible program, i think Trend Micro made it), you give full administrative access (using the whole Microsoft Big Brother package - SMS, WMI, etc.), you allow them to run scripts that push updates and certain software packages over the network, and some other things im not sure of that are included in the security policy. All this is great on paper, but the fact is they have some pretty inefficient scripts and poorly manage their servers, so this leads to 10-15min startup times, random periods where my hard disk (which is slow as it is) will be slammed by svchost for whatever reason, leaving everything else in the dust.

well they say you need to use the supplied thinkpads when you are at school, but there is a guest wireless network that is pretty much the same (although unsecured) so you can get internet access but not have access to the network resources such as exchange.

That´s a very restrictive IT policy at your University, isn´t it against first amendment?... anyway... I have the same erratic behaviour wirh my screen resolution, it changes sometimes without any apparent reason and I have to reset manually, any hint?

Take a look at this thread:

Appears to be the same/similar problem that you are having.
