Having migrated my XP installation from my T43 to T61p in an orderly manner following Geary’s method described here I ran into two problems of which one I could solve;
Solved: After installing the image to the T61 I got a message saying that log-in through fingerprint was unsuccessful and the TP would restart. It did and did and did i.e. was looping after the log-in. The solution was to delete all fingerprints and disable the FP software in the T43 before re-imaging. – result no looping everything OK.
It was clear that there would be some driver issues and so I downloaded the larger drivers onto a CF card during imaging; video, lan, wlan etc. After the imaging was finished I installed these drivers and ran system update, didn’t offer a lot except for Utility updates, so I downloaded / installed all other drivers.
Unsolved: everything works fine, BUT I have an unknown PCI-Device;
PCI-Bus 0, Device 27 Function 0.
Instance: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2848&SUBSYS_20AC17AAREV_03\3&B1BFB68&0&D8
I noticed that there was no sound, (except system beep), and also no modem installed not normally a big problem. The usual culprits had been installed, wtpm, ibmpm, acpi, intelinf, imsm etc. etc. When trying to install the modem driver it searches for hardware then reports it can’t install because “a device for this driver cannot be found”. When I try to install the audio driver it reports “HD Audio-Bus driver could not be found”. Being somewhat frustrated I removed the modem card only to find on re-starting the unknown PCI-Device was still present. I am pretty sure there are no drivers left for me to download, Bluetooth, Active Protection, Fingerprint, Acc Con, Hot-Key all work. Fn + F* buttons work fine, volume buttons do NOT.
After starting the “New Hardware Found” message always shows up twice.
Comparing the device managers, my XP and original Vista, the following are present in the Vista installation and not in the XP:
Sound Max HD Audio device.
ThinkPad Modem
Memory Controller
Security Device (this disappears when security chip set to disabled in bios).
Ladies and Gentlemen, what have I missed?

You need to install this driver, the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver (Q888111) for Windows XP with Service Pack 2. This is required for audio and I believe also for the modem. You may have to reinstall the audio and modem drivers after installing the UAA driver.

Thanks alot steve
, you were right. I actually knew about that, but didn't concider it relevant
It worked a treat, after installing it I could install both audio and modem drivers without problems, and the volume buttons work.
However, the unknown PCI device was still there, not up the top of the list as before, but had moved to the IDE ATA/ATAPI-controller category. This I solved, (eventually), it was part of the Intel Matrix driver. (I had installed it previously with "install.cmd").
So everything works great and I am a very happy camper
