T60 Reccomended Memory Modules

#1 Post by dandaman61 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 9:30 pm

Hey folks,

Anybody have any particular memory recommendations for a 1GB module for my T60. Any brands to avoid? This seems to be as good as any.

But I wanted to be sure to check in with some "experts" first.

Thanks a lot in advance guys! :)

I'm not familiar with the G.SKILL brand but I would definitely vouch for crucial for their lifetime warranty and excellent service department. Back with my 600, I actually had one memory slot go bad (not good when the motherboard limits you to 128 megs per slot) but initially I thought it was the DIMM, and went through several replacements with crucial attempting to fix the problem, with no complaints whatsoever even though in the end they'd sent me several replacements for a problem that turned out not to be due to the memory module itself.

When the price is the same - or even close - always go crucial IMO :)

Before ordering anything it is very important to know what memory you have installed in your computer (size, brand, timings, etc). This can be done by taking off the palm rest. Next you must do some testing with a program to find out the real timings (I used CPU-Z). My original RAM stated 5-5-5-12 on its label but in reality it is a 5-5-5-15, it's a Hynix 1GB module.

After gathering this info order the other module. I got a Samsung 1GB module and it worked great so far, I do CAD and some applications are quite demanding. Since I live on the other side of the Atlantic I couldn't order from NewEgg, but if I would I would try to get the 2x 2GB from GEIL or 1 GB GEIL module.

Good luck,

I purchased g.skill RAM and it doesn't seem to be working correctly, but I might just have a bad motherboard aka planar card.

I will let you know in a couple days when I find out, I am trying Lenovo RAM that is supposed to be compatible, we'll see if that makes any difference.

T60 can be surprisingly picky about memory.

I've heard the worst stories from Kingston purchases.

The best stuff made is Crucial. Period, bar none. And the T6x loves it.

I heard that the Samsung memory modules that Lenovo sells are the highest quality...

it's a crap-shoot buying lenovo memory since they source OEM memory from samsung, infineon, micron, and hynix.   all four are excellent, don't get me wrong, but you won't necessarily end up with a matched brand pair if ordering multiple units and there's no way to specify what you want.

Not to thread jack, but I have a related question.

I have a single 1G module and have read that it is better to add memory in matched pairs.

Would it be better to add a single 1G module giving system memory of 2G, or add a 2G Module upping the memory to 3G even though it won't be matched pairs. (WinXP)

I have a similar question. Since I'm running XP, I'm thinking about bumping up to 3Gb total by swapping one of my two 1Gb modules for a new 2Gb module.

You would be better to add a single 2GB memory card. You will get much, much more benefit overall out of having the T60 maximum amount of 3GB available than in having only 2GB of "matched" memory.

I used a Corsair 2GB Lifetime Warranty DDR2 667 SO-DIMM card to build my T60 up to 3GB, and it works very nicely.

Cheers,

Bill
