770e DEV 017 ERR 82 FRU 6010

#1 Post by LPC » Tue Oct 16, 2007 7:04 am

Hi all....I guess I am getting into the thinkpad obsession.... :D
Funny...after I get one two others just found me. My father in-law has two unworking TPs the first is a 770e 9548-52U diagnosed with a bad hard drive. The other I have not seen yet.

770e Symptoms:

Start up black screen with message "163264 KB OK"

"Beep"

Diskette F1 promt screen.

press F1

code displayed I9990305

Action I took:

The HMM and User Guide states I9990305 means no bootable device is availed.

tested in easy setup system board and CD-1 and HDD-1.
Both the system board and CD-1 test passed
The HDD-1 had an error.
DEV 017
ERR 82
FRU 6010

I tried booting up via the CD-1 into win98. reset boot order to only CD-1. Boot up worked fine and was able to access 98 setup or dos prompt.

I completely removed HDD-1 (Hitachi 20gig 54000) from TP and reseated in caddy and replaced.

Tested hard drive in easy setup. Test passed!

reset boot order in easy setup to only HDD-1 in boot order.

reboot and 98 loaded! Thought the problem was fixed, but when I rebooted this morning original symptoms repeated. Retested HDD-1 in easy setup and same error displayed.
DEV 017
ERR 82
FRU 6010

I am not able to find in the HMM or user guided what err 82 or FRU 6010 is.

Also what would be my next step? Should I continue testing the HD? I found this page http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... test+error

And will try this evening, but thought I would start a thread and see what the community has to say :D

Thanks

Well last night I tried to test the HDD-1 with the Drive fitness test. I was not even able to find it. I tried inputing the S/N, but the DFT was still not able to find it. This might be user error. I am pretty sure the MOBO connection and cable connection are good because the easy setup finds and can test HDD-1. What can I be doing wrong in the DFT that it does not see it? HD model: HTS541020G9AT00 P/N: 13G1581 S/N: X9C0N10F.

I also still do not know what Easy setup error 82 and FRU 6010 means.

All help appreciated.

Thanks

I did some searches on the easy test messege on the HDD-1 DEV 017 ERR 82 FRU 6010. I am now thinking the HD is not the case based on below findings and the fact that it did boot up once.

Could the cable connecting the HD to the port (P/N 83H6267) be bad?

Not sure where to go on this?

Read the HMM carefully. It may not have error 82, but it may. FRU 6010 means first try replacing whatever corresponds to code 60, then if that doesn't work, put the old one back and try unit 10, which I believe is the system board.

Wizkid,

Thanks for the reply. I missed how to read the FRUs your right code 10 is the system board and code 60 is the HD. I was not able to find error 82 did a search and could not find anything.....8082 PCMCIA register test failure. I will try to remove the PCMCIA card and see if that makes a difference. Should I try to update the Bios?
Not sure if I can get my hands on a HD will the HD out of my T23 work?

Thanks

The hard drive should work in the 770. It may be limited to 8GB, but maybe not, and it will at least let you get a working machine. (I've never had a 770, but I had a 20GB drive in my 750P, and it ran just fine as long as the boot partition was in the first 8GB.)

I would update the BIOS. Every major version of Windows seemed to require a BIOS upgrade.

Update:

I updated the bios last night to the current version IDET38WW.
In installation instructions from Lenovo I had to "initialize" in Easy-Setup. Restart and run tests in Easy-Setup. All test passed including HD. Restarted booting with CD and ran DFT. The HD was found! Ran both quick test and advanced test both passed no errors! So my HD is fine. I restarted booting with CD and ran Hard drive firmware update utility from Lenovo. No updates were needed. I finally booted up with HD and entered Win98! Wait.......there’s more. I shut off in Win98 and reboot get same Diskette F1 prompt screen.
code displayed I9990305

HD test in Easy-Setup and get same codes
DEV 017
ERR 82
FRU 6010

Here’s the juice......

If I reinitialize in Easy-Setup and restart Boots no prob into Win98. When exit out of win98 via restart/shutdown/reset with power button I get Diskette F1 prompt screen and code displayed I9990305.

If I reinitialize and restart and let it boot up till win98 splash screen then shutdown via powerbutten then restart it boots into Win98 not prob.

If I reinitialize and restart in Easy-setup and return into Easy-Setup and restart via powerbutten then restart it boots into Win98 not prob.

So my deduction is that if I let it boot all the way into Win98 desktop something changes/resets so when I restart/shutdown/poweroff I have to reinitialize to be able to read HD. If I restart/shutdown/poweroff at any time before complete boot up into Win98 or in Easy-setup HD is recognized. I can replicate this consistently

Any ideas why this might be happening?

My next step is I am going to Erase boot sector on the HD with DFT and reload a clean win98 and see if that fixes the prob......to be continued....

I suggest you test your CMOS battery. That might not be it, but it's a simple test, and cheap to replace.

How do I test the CMOS Battery?

Update:

I erased the boot sector on the HD with DFT and reload a clean win98 second edition. The problem is fixed! I can boot up no problem and HD is always recognized now. :D
