R52 with Pentium-M 715 doesnt work! please help!

#1 Post by BachManiac » Tue Oct 16, 2007 2:03 pm

Hi!

I have a Thinkpad R52 with a Celeron 370 Processor (1,5 GHZ) and changed it to a Pentium-M 715 (Dothan 1,5 GHZ):

http://cgi.ebay.at/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0165092296

But it makes problems.

In Bios (newest version and settings at default F9) the CPU is shown correctly, but neither Windows-XP, or XP-Install-CD, or Acronis-Boot-CD works! All programs hangs up at booting.

Error messages like "faulty hal.dll" or "faulty ntoskrnl.exe" are shown... always different!

So is the cpu broken or not supportet by the R52?
Maybe the stepping B1 is too old???

please help!

AFIK this isn't a processor problem, probably more a hdd problem. Check the hard drive with a suitable test program e.g. spinrite or from the hdd manufacturer.

And it doesn't try to run the CPU at 533MHz bus by any chance?

why the hdd?

the problem exists only when the pentium-m is inserted. on celeron all works fine!

also booting from CD is impossible.

yes, this could be the reason!
i have only PC4200 Ram which only supports FSB 400.

I though that the Pentium-M 715 only run with FSB 400:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M (english wiki doesn't have such a list)

tomorrow I have the chance to test a FSB533-Ram, then I know for sure.

In bios I set power-sheme to max-battery, so I was sure that all parts run on minimum performance.... hmmm.

The R52 board differences were regarding the presence of; 1000 lan, firewire or what type of grafic chip. The CPU went up to the P-M 780 2.26 GHz.

Or, maybe the cpu is shot?

I saw that my PC4200-Ram is already FSB533 - ready. So now I'm sure that the CPU is down.
